Businessman Oupa Brown Mogotsi is set to remain in detention for an additional week following his appearance at the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court in Gauteng on Monday. He is facing multiple charges linked to an alleged staged assassination attempt reported in Vosloorus.
During the brief hearing, Mogotsi faced charges related to defeating the ends of justice.
The proceedings were postponed to facilitate a formal bail application next week and to verify his residential address.
The case is now rescheduled for Monday, 25 May 2026, at which time a formal bail application will be made. Mogotsi will remain in custody for another week as he faces charges of defeating the ends of justice.
On 3 November 2025, Mogotsi allegedly informed the police that he was driving alone in Vosloorus when he was chased by individuals in a bakkie, who reportedly fired multiple shots at his vehicle, forcing him to flee on foot.
In response to his claims, the police initiated an investigation into the alleged attempted murder. However, it later emerged that Mogotsi may have intentionally stopped his vehicle, exited while armed, and fired shots into his own car.
Additionally, he is accused of providing a false statement under oath in an affidavit submitted to a commissioner of oaths, inaccurately asserting that he had been targeted by unknown assailants.
The state prosecutor requested that the court extend the remand period for Mogotsi’s case by seven days to give investigators adequate time to confirm his residential address located in Mmabatho, Mahikeng, in the North West province.
The defense opposed this request, arguing it was unnecessary for the state to take an entire week to verify the address. Instead, Mogotsi’s legal representatives requested a postponement until Thursday.
