All Security Checks Cleared as Comrades Marathon Approaches, Ensuring Safety for Runners

In preparation for the Comrades Marathon on 7 June 2025, National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Fannie Masemola announced that all security checks have been completed. With law enforcement collaborating across Pietermaritzburg and Durban, safety measures include helicopters, drones, K9 units, and mounted patrols to ensure a secure environment for participants and spectators.

Security Measures for the Comrades Marathon

National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Fannie Masemola confirmed that all security checks are complete ahead of the Comrades Marathon set for tomorrow, ensuring safety for participants.

Masemola stated, “We have air support through helicopters and drones to monitor areas that might not be easily visible,” reinforcing their commitment to a secure race environment.

In collaboration with law enforcement partners in Pietermaritzburg and Durban, the police have armed themselves with K9 units and motorbikes for comprehensive coverage during the event.

Support and Preparation from SAPS Officers

Among the participants, 444 members of the SAPS Marathon Association will compete, highlighting their dedication to both fitness and community safety.

Officer Siyabonga Ndlela remarked, “The Comrades has instilled discipline in me,” emphasizing how training for the marathon fosters resilience and perseverance in his work.

Officer Lebogang Motshedi, aiming for a sub-nine-hour completion, expressed confidence in his preparation, stating, “I’ve done a lot of training. So, I’m definitely ready for tomorrow.”
