Amapiano artist DBN Gogo recently disclosed a significant career regret, mentioning that she was initially invited to contribute to the global hit “Mnike.” During an interview with SlikourOnLife, she reflected on how the track evolved into one of the most popular Amapiano songs worldwide.
Released by Tyler ICU and featuring Tumelo.za, Nandipha808, Ceeka RSA and DJ Maphorisa, “Mnike” has become a worldwide sensation since its launch. The song not only topped charts but also gained traction across social media, establishing itself as one of the most recognized Amapiano tracks internationally. DBN Gogo has come forward to reveal that she was offered a chance to be part of the record before it gained global acclaim.
During her conversation, the DJ revealed that Tyler ICU had reached out to her with the track during its formative stages, looking for her feedback and possibly including her in the project.
“Mnike, I’m gonna tell you now, fun fact, Tyler sent me that song. I can’t even tell you what happened. It was also in the thing of sending a lot of music and he’s like, ‘Gogo, what do you think of this? Let me know, I want you to be part of it.’ Regrets, regrets!” she shared.
She expressed that losing the opportunity to take part in the project is one of her major “what if” incidents in her career. As is common for artists receiving a deluge of music from partners, the moment just passed her by.
Regardless of this regret, DBN Gogo emphasized that she respects and celebrates Tyler ICU for the track’s success. She acknowledged the song’s significant role in advancing the Amapiano genre on an international scale.
“Congratulations to him. That’s the biggest Amapiano song in the world, I think, still to this day,” she noted.
“Mnike” has played a crucial role in elevating Amapiano on the global stage, amassing impressive streaming numbers and going viral on platforms like TikTok and YouTube. The song’s success has opened doors for the genre, introducing it to new listeners worldwide and solidifying Tyler ICU’s status as a leading producer within the scene.
Though DBN Gogo did not participate in the hit, she continues to significantly contribute to the global expansion of Amapiano through her live performances, productions, and various collaborations.
Her candid remarks regarding this moment have resonated with many fans, illustrating that even successful musicians face missed chances. Nonetheless, DBN Gogo remains a pivotal figure in promoting Amapiano from South Africa to the world.
