Toronto-based artist Drake is escalating his legal battle against Universal Music Group (UMG) by seeking confidential documents connected to Kendrick Lamar in a defamation case.
He is urging the court to compel UMG and its CEO, Lucian Grainge, to produce the complete contract of Kendrick Lamar.

Additionally, Drake is requesting information related to accusations of domestic violence and other alleged criminal behavior involving the Compton artist, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Drake claims that UMG endorsed false statements made against him via Kendrick Lamar’s diss track Not Like Us.
He asserts that the intent was to damage Drake’s music career and brand during ongoing contract negotiations.
HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN?
This contentious rivalry began after the 2023 release of Drake and J. Cole’s song First Person Shooter. In that track, they presented themselves as the “big three” alongside Lamar.
Kendrick’s reaction was further dismissive, igniting a series of fierce diss tracks rife with serious allegations, including accusations of domestic abuse and pedophilia.
Drake’s legal representatives contend that UMG has only provided a heavily redacted 22-page version of Lamar’s contract, which they believe is impossible to interpret.
They are now pursuing access to the complete, unredacted contract and financial statements that reveal Interscope’s earnings.

Furthermore, Drake’s team demands an assessment of Lamar’s music catalogue over the previous five and a half years.
Drake argues that this data is vital, as he suspects UMG has capitalized on the purportedly defamatory material to boost its profits.
In his diss track Family Matters, Drake notably accuses Lamar of treating his wife poorly and questions his parental capabilities.
He questions, “When you put your hands on your girl, is it self-defence ‘cause she’s bigger than you?” He also claims, “They hired a crisis management team to address the fact that you beat on your queen.”
UMG RESPONDS
In response, UMG maintains that Lucian Grainge had “no meaningful involvement” in this matter.
