eThekwini Prepares for Africa’s Premier Horse Racing and Fashion Event

The eThekwini Metro is set to host the Hollywoodbets Durban July this Saturday, hailed as Africa’s premier horse racing and social event. Attendees will witness top-tier horses and jockeys compete for a prestigious title and a prize pool of R5 million. With an expected economic boost of R278 million from direct spending, the event also features a vibrant fashion showcase themed “Marvels of Mzansi.” Mayor Cyril Xaba anticipates a significant job creation impact, with around 4,000 jobs, while Race Coast’s Stephen Marshall highlights the event’s dual focus on fashion and horse racing, supported by a mentorship program for emerging designers.

Economic Impact of the Durban July

The Hollywoodbets Durban July is expected to generate significant economic benefits for eThekwini. Mayor Cyril Xaba noted a projected direct expenditure of around R278 million associated with the event.

Additionally, the event may contribute over R700 million to the city’s GDP, as stated by Xaba. With the economic uplift, the event highlights the importance of tourism in local development.

Alongside financial gains, the Durban July is anticipated to create approximately 4,000 jobs, providing much-needed employment opportunities. “We truly welcome such spectacular events to the city,” Xaba remarked.

Fashion and Cultural Showcase

This year’s Durban July theme, ‘Marvels of Mzansi,’ underscores the event’s dual focus on horse racing and fashion. The event will spotlight local designers and emerging talent.

Stephen Marshall from Race Coast highlighted the inclusion of designer competitions for students, showcasing their work in front of a broader audience. This initiative aims to encourage and mentor young designers.

Broadcasting the event on SABC TV after an eight-year absence reflects its cultural significance. Marshall remarked, “This event is not merely about horse racing; otherwise, it wouldn’t garner so much interest.”

In summary, the eThekwini Metro is brimming with excitement as it prepares to host the Hollywoodbets Durban July, a premier horse racing and fashion event. Anticipated economic benefits and opportunities for local talent underscore the significance of this iconic celebration.
