Having held the titles of Miss South Africa 2021 and Miss Supranational 2022, Lalela Mswane is well-versed in the realm of competition, making her participation in the 12th edition of Tropika Island of Treasure seem quite fitting.
The South African had the opportunity to speak with the 28-year-old Mswane as she gears up for the intense physical and psychological tests that await her.
You are used to a different kind of competitive environment. Are you ready for this kind of challenge?
I truly am. At this stage in my life, I’m eager to try things that deviate from the norm, experiences I wouldn’t typically pursue. While this isn’t the usual competition format for me, a competition is still a competition, and my goal is to come out on top.
Are you athletic?
I consider myself quite athletic. Back in primary school, I was recognized as the fastest runner. I think overall, my determination often surprises even me. I am committed to achieving anything I aspire to. So, coupled with my athleticism, my mental strength is a significant advantage.
What is it about the setup of this challenge that you are most excited about?
This is a completely new experience for me. I’m looking forward to exploring fresh opportunities and pushing my limits. Any chance to engage in something novel or unfamiliar is something I embrace wholeheartedly.
And the time away is not going to be a challenge in itself for you?
Not at all. During my reign as Miss Supra, I was hardly home. I spent weeks living in different corners of the globe, so what’s three more weeks?
Do you have a favourite season or competitor(s) from past seasons that made a mark on you?
My favorite season has to be Season 11… the winners were genuine underdogs from the start. They were initially perceived as the “weakest links,” yet they were paired together by fate. Watching their journey was nothing short of inspiring. If I could team up with someone who shares that kind of determination… wow!
If you could choose anyone to be partnered with, whether it’s someone you already know or someone on your wishlist, who would it be and why?
It would be my brother. He possesses emotional, intellectual, and physical strength. He’s incredibly reliable. Additionally, forming bonds with my fellow celebrities has been enjoyable; they each exhibit qualities I admire in a teammate. So, if I had to choose, I would happily partner with any of them.
Were you friends with any of the other celebrities before now?
No, I met all of them through this experience. But when you see us together, you might assume we’ve been friends for ages. Recently, I’ve really connected with Amanda and Caster.
Any particular fear you hope will not be challenged?
No, I’m generally fearless… well, that’s not entirely true. I do have one significant fear: rodents. If there’s any challenge involving a rat or something similar, I might just lose it.
Do you have a dream destination you would like to do this show at?
I’d love to go somewhere I haven’t been yet, especially since Bali is on my bucket list. However, I have already visited most of the islands I dream of. Bali or Réunion would be ideal.
Do you have a lucky charm or emotional support item you want to take with you?
I have a pair of lucky shoes in my profession. Each time I’ve won something, it’s always in those shoes. However, since they’re heels, they’re not practical for this competition. So, I don’t have a lucky charm for this event, and that’s alright.
What strengths do you think will put you above the rest of your competitors?
I believe my determination and resilience will set me apart. Once I commit to a goal, [I follow through]. Additionally, if someone tells me I can’t accomplish something, it just fuels my desire to prove them wrong.
