‘He’s got technique, speed and power and he uses those things every time,’ said Vilakazi.
Former captain of Orlando Pirates and midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns, Benedict ‘Tso’ Vilakazi, has shared his thoughts on Mohau Nkota’s notable transfer to Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League, where he will join Dutch national and ex-Liverpool player Georginio Wijnaldum.
Speaking on iDiskiTV, Vilakazi commended Nkota’s offensive skills and even compared the 20-year-old winger to former Real Madrid icon Gareth Bale, pointing out his skillful play, speed, and strength.
‘Nkota … reminds me of Gareth Bale’
“What I like about Nkota is that he reminds me of Gareth Bale because he knows that he’s got technique, speed and power and he uses those things every time,” said Vilakazi.
“He will chase down defenders and cut inside to utilize his skills and strength. It’s actually a fortunate opportunity for him to be there as he will face talents like Ronaldo and other top players who have achieved great things.
“The insights he will gain by mingling with individuals who have triumphed in World Cups and Champions Leagues like Cristiano and Sadio Mané is invaluable because they are present there.”
Nkota had a standout season with the Buccaneers, appearing in 39 matches and contributing to 12 goals. However, Vilakazi feels that the Soweto club has prepared for his exit by acquiring Bafana Bafana player Oswin Appollis from Polokwane City in anticipation of the 2025–26 Betway Premiership season.
“Kudos to the young man, and I wish him success abroad even though questions may arise regarding why he chose Saudi Arabia instead of pursuing opportunities in Portugal or Spain,” Vilakazi concluded.
‘Pirates won’t suffer that much’
“However, when you’re abroad, you find yourself in a setting where everyone has the opportunity to notice you. That’s the reason Pirates signed Appollis, as I believe they were aware they might lose one player out of (Relebohile) Mofokeng and Nkota.
“Pirates won’t feel his absence greatly because he (Nkota) came in and was not always a starter at Pirates, but whenever he played, he performed well and helped the team advance, so I genuinely wish him the best.”
