- South African rapper Cassper Nyovest has recently made allegations against his rival AKA for copying him
- In a recent interview, Nyovest suggested that the late rapper may have borrowed from one of his earlier tracks
- This claim has ignited a vigorous discussion online as fans reflect on the two rappers’ ongoing feud
Cassper Nyovest, an established rapper and entrepreneur from South Africa, addressed the issue of AKA allegedly imitating his work.
In a discussion on the L-Tido Podcast on May 1, 2025, Nyovest, whose real name is Refiloe Phoolo, expressed his belief that the late Supa Mega “bit” off one of his earlier songs:
“I always felt like Sim Dope was a bite of a song that I almost released on my first album.”
In hip hop culture, “biting” refers to the act of closely imitating another artist’s distinct style, lyrics, or beats. This practice is regarded as plagiarism, which differs from sampling, where an artist creatively reinterprets segments of another’s song.
While sampling is generally accepted, biting is frowned upon and considered disrespectful.
Cassper revealed that he almost joined AKA’s previous record label, Vth Season, and suspects that AKA may have had access to his debut album, Tsholofelo, before its release, potentially hearing an earlier iteration of the song.
He mentioned that he ultimately decided against including the track on that album and instead released it three years later on his follow-up project, Thuto. This song is known as Tito Mboweni.
“Tito Mboweni was on my first album; there was another version. I always felt like Sim Dope was a concept from a person like Tito Mboweni. It had that drum. It was also a time when Lex Luger was doing that sound. It’s an interesting story, but I never got any confirmation.”
While both tracks achieved commercial success, data from Spotify indicates that Cassper’s song garnered greater popularity. As of September, Tito Mboweni boasts over 2.2 million streams, while Sim Dope follows closely with 2.1 million streams.
These allegations surfaced a year after the tragic shooting of AKA in Durban on February 10.
This is not the first instance in which Nyovest has claimed that AKA copied him. Previously, he accused the late rapper of “plagiarising” his track Turn Up Gang for his song Fully In.
His remarks have ignited fierce discussions on social media, particularly among those who question his credibility.
Briefly News reached out to Vth Season for clarification regarding Nyovest’s claims, but they had not provided a response by the time of publication.

“I’m sorry, Cassper could NEVER make a Sim Dope. Ever.”
Many comments echoed the sentiment that Nyovest is misleading the public and “rewriting history” due to the fact that AKA is not available to respond to the accusations.
