Softfootball reports that UEFA has officially announced the cancellation of the much-anticipated Finalissima, which was set to feature Argentina’s national football team against Spain’s national team.
The match, which was meant to take place in Qatar on March 26, will not occur due to ongoing political tensions in the Middle East, according to the governing body.
UEFA considered multiple options, including hosting the game at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium or arranging a two-legged fixture in both Madrid and Buenos Aires. However, the Argentinian Football Association declined these proposals.

Following Manchester City’s 1–1 draw with West Ham United on March 14, 2026, during Matchday 30 of the 2025/26 Premier League, Argentina expressed discontent with the decision to host the match at the Bernabéu. Questions arose as to why FIFA did not consider alternative locations in England, Italy, or Germany, rather than canceling the event altogether.
Football journalist Fabrizio Romano shared the news on his X account, highlighting that while the match was initially slated for Qatar, it was ultimately called off after both federations could not agree on a new location.
Fabrizio stated:
UEFA announce La Finalissima between Argentina and Spain has been cancelled. Decision made following political situation in Middle East with match initially planned in Qatar, then no agreement on different venue between the Federations.

In its statement, UEFA noted that while other viable options were examined, none met Argentina’s approval. Reports indicate that Argentina was particularly displeased with the potential of hosting the match in Spain.
The cancellation has prompted discussions regarding the lack of movement to neutral sites in England, Italy, or Germany, leading to the decision to eliminate the tournament entirely.
Pep Guardiola has since dismissed claims that Manchester City’s attempt to defend their Premier League title is over following their 1–1 draw with West Ham United on March 14, 2026.
