The Montreux Jazz Festival Franschhoek, supported by Nedbank, is set to enrich its auditory experience by incorporating 15 DJs and vinyl selectors into the lineup for its first African edition. This initiative aligns with the festival’s aim to highlight a diverse range of contemporary music culture beyond the headliner acts.
Curating the sound are prominent South African selectors, such as DJ Zinhle, DJ Kent, Kay Faith, That Guy S’bu, Trev The Japanese, Lelowhatsgood, DJ Mighty, DJ Kenzhero, Homie.Lover.Friend, Nelee, Charles Leonard, CandyFlip, the duo of Cassiem Latief and Leighton Moody, along with Europe-based Rosey Gold.
This diverse group reflects South Africa’s dynamic music scene, encompassing genres such as jazz, soul, house, hip-hop, and rare groove. Throughout the weekend, these selectors will occupy various venues within the festival, ranging from cozy vinyl listening sessions at the Jazz Village to energetic DJ performances at The Arches Stage.
For Mark Goedvolk, the festival’s founder, the involvement of DJs is vital to the Montreux ethos. The renowned Montreux Jazz Festival has always celebrated musical exploration, and DJs in South Africa are key to how fans engage with sound today.
Laurie Rhoda, the Music and Programming Curator, notes that selectors serve a role beyond just entertainment; they are keepers of musical history and cultural bridges, connecting different genres, time periods, and communities through their selections.
The festival also aims to act as a significant cultural and economic force for the Western Cape. As stated by the province’s Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, events like this generate employment, foster local talent, and promote South African creativity on a global stage.
Scheduled for 27–29 March 2026 in Franschhoek, this event marks the inaugural landing of the famed Swiss-born festival on African soil, bringing together both international artists and local innovators, alongside the DJs who contribute to the ongoing cultural conversation.
Additional artists are anticipated to be announced shortly.
