Gauteng Premier Unveils Smart, Tamper-Proof Number Plate System to Fight Crime

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi introduced a new high-tech, tamper-proof provincial number plate system on June 9, 2025, at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg. Designed to combat vehicle theft and improve road safety, this intelligent system features tamper-evident decals and forensic QR codes. With support from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, the initiative aims to streamline vehicle tracking and empower law enforcement, marking a strategic shift in crime-fighting efforts across the province.

Introduction of High-Tech Number Plate System

On June 9, 2025, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi unveiled an advanced number plate system aimed at enhancing vehicle security and reducing crime. “This initiative allows us to account for every vehicle on our public roads,” he stated.

The system features tamper-evident decals and forensic QR codes, designed to combat vehicle theft and cloning. The Premier referred to it as a significant advancement in crime-fighting measures in Gauteng.

This innovative approach, supported by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, reflects a shift from outdated crime fighting methods. “Those using fraudulent or duplicate number plates will have no place on our roads,” Lesufi emphasized.

Enhanced Law Enforcement and Safety Initiatives

Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, highlighted the number plate system as a crucial element of the Provincial Integrated Crime Prevention Strategy. This initiative seeks to bolster regulatory compliance.

The launch also coincided with the addition of 96 officers from the Road Traffic Management Corporation to improve traffic law enforcement visibility. This increase aims to stabilize taxi violence in hotspot areas.

Diale-Tlabela underscored collaboration with various stakeholders in law enforcement to ensure vehicle traceability. “These smart plates will disrupt criminal networks and elevate road safety across Gauteng,” she asserted.

In conclusion, the introduction of Gauteng’s high-tech number plate system heralds a revolutionary step in crime prevention and road safety, reflecting Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s commitment to modernizing law enforcement and enhancing vehicle traceability across the province.
