Riky Rick’s Legacy Remembered Four Years After His Untimely Death. Today marks the fourth anniversary of the passing of South African hip-hop icon Rikhado “Riky Rick” Makhado on February 23, 2022.
At the age of 34, the renowned rapper, producer, and cultural figure left an enduring mark through his artistry, commitment to family, and support for youth mental health. His legacy continues to foster creativity and inspire a worldwide community.
In the aftermath of his death, Riky Rick’s loved ones and community transformed their sorrow into action. Inspired by his conviction that art and culture can heal, unite, and promote change, the Riky Rick Foundation for the Promotion of Artivism was established in 2022. This organization advances his vision by promoting “artivism,” which merges creative expression with activism to foster social change, justice, and mental health awareness.
Over the course of four years, the Foundation has evolved into a Global Artivism movement with a remarkable impact. It has hosted international events that gather artists, activists, and cultural leaders from across the globe. The inaugural convening in South Africa attracted participants from 86 countries to discuss the role of art in shaping a promising future.
In November 2025, the second Global Artivism Convening was held in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, bringing together over 800 delegates from more than 60 countries, coinciding with vital global climate discussions like COP30. These meetings have fortified connections, elevated diverse voices, and illustrated the restorative power of culture in inspiring collective action.
The Foundation has also supported young artists through mentorship, resources, and advocacy efforts. Initiatives such as the mental health campaign “Words That Heal,” launched in 2025, and the innovative single “Stronger,” which utilized AI to revive Riky’s voice from his previous work, have highlighted the importance of mental health, destigmatized personal struggles, and raised funds for youth support. These initiatives echo Riky Rick’s own experiences and his belief that vulnerability can embody strength.
“Riky touched hearts, bodies, and souls because he understood that culture and the arts are an immensely powerful spark for change,” the Foundation declared in its anniversary statement. “Four years later, we continue to honour his vision of love.”
As the world pays tribute to the founder of Cotton Fest and an advocate for “the Culture,” his message resonates: We Never Die, We Multiply. Through the Foundation, Riky Rick’s legacy persists, empowering youth to harness creativity, prioritize mental health, and pursue social justice.
