Following Manchester City’s 3–1 FA Cup win over Newcastle United on March 7, 2026, John Stones shared his thoughts on the challenges faced during his return to competitive football after a lengthy injury absence.
The defender acknowledged that coming back to elite football post-injury has been a test, particularly in a high-energy venue like St James’ Park.
In a post-match discussion, as reported by Sportslivy via youtube channel, Stones remarked:
Passing you and getting your second start, how difficult has this season been for you and how much did you enjoy being back out there, John?
John Stones:
“Start of the season was great and then I picked up an injury, got re-injured, and it’s been tough to get back in the team and get that rhythm again. But it’s just nice to be out there, nice to be playing and contributing, and getting that rhythm back.”“It’s massive, especially in the first 20 minutes. Here it’s always difficult the pace, the power. Obviously we keep a high line and they figured it out in a few instances.”
“It’s about getting back into it and having that positivity so that when you’re called upon, you’re ready. I think we did that tonight with all the lads.”

The 31-year-old stressed the necessity of being prepared for chances, noting that despite Newcastle’s aggressive start, the team’s determination allowed them to achieve victory.
Stones’ return is a significant milestone in his recovery after nearly four months sidelined by recurring muscle injuries. His presence is vital for City as they gear up for critical matches, including their next UEFA Champions League encounter against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Nonetheless, despite his role within the team, it has been reported that Stones may be one of several players facing potential transfer in the summer 2026 transfer window. According to Softfootball, manager Pep Guardiola is contemplating a reduction in squad size to cultivate a more physically resilient team amid a rigorous schedule.
Stones started the 2025–26 season as a key player but faced a prolonged absence from November to February due to muscle problems. His reintroduction in March provides Guardiola with an additional defensive option as Manchester City approaches a pivotal phase in the season.
