Exclusive Interview: K.Keed Discusses the Heartfelt Journey Behind ‘Bite The Bullet (Deluxe)’ – “This Is My Debut, It Means the World to Me.” K.Keed is preparing to release “Bite the Bullet (Deluxe)” this Friday. The enhanced version of her debut album provides fans with greater insight into her journey of introspection, strength, and artistic evolution.
In a conversation with SA Hip Hop Mag, K.Keed shared her inspiration for the deluxe edition, discussed her creative process, and reflected on her role as a representative for young women in South African hip-hop.
K.Keed noted that her choice to produce a deluxe edition instead of a new project stemmed from the deeply personal nature of the album. She emphasized that Bite the Bullet encapsulates themes of self-discovery and overcoming challenges to reach her current position.
“The destination is not always as stable as we might wish compared to the journey,” she stated. “Allowing me to expand the world of Bite the Bullet only enhances the original narrative. I’ve always intended to create a deluxe version, so this was part of my plan from the beginning. This deluxe edition explores similar themes that correspond with the original album. I sought to determine if I could enhance the sound while maintaining its authentic essence and elevating the new material.”
Regarding the reflection of her current mental and musical state, K.Keed described a pivotal moment in her personal development. She emphasized that overcoming challenges fosters resilience and shapes one’s character.
“You discover aspects of yourself that you may appreciate or dislike,” she shared. “However, it is vital for building resilience, and that has been one of the key revelations I experienced during this journey.
“I’m a strong advocate for learning and unlearning; therefore, I approach everything with caution. This approach has enabled me to remain composed and recognize that emotions coexist with reality. Using music to channel these emotions and experiences has been invaluable. I aim for listeners to recognize the growth and experience in the music, appreciating every lyric and emotion’s nuance and intention.”
K.Keed also expressed that the deluxe edition serves as a tribute to her supporters, who have been there through a year filled with her prolific work. “I genuinely wanted to offer more to my fans. This deluxe edition is merely a bonus to what I’ve shared with them this year. I have never released this much music within a single year throughout my career, so this is my chance to reshape that narrative. Moreover, Bite the Bullet deserves recognition before I commence new projects. It’s my debut, and it holds great significance for me.”
Furthermore, she noted that the deluxe edition brings new energy through collaborations with younger producers. “This deluxe has a vibrant quality and energy. I integrated it seamlessly with the original material. I discovered a method to align the extension without disrupting the authentic essence.”
K.Keed reflected on her musical identity and flexibility. While hip-hop remains her primary genre, she is open to exploring various sounds. “Hip-hop is my foundation. It holds an unparalleled place in my heart. Exploring new genres might be new for some, but I’ve always had this version of myself in the back of my mind. I enjoy realizing my potential and pushing boundaries. I will always appreciate hip-hop, but I won’t confine myself to it. I love creating across all genres, and that has always defined me.”
She emphasized that honesty and authenticity are vital to her artistic approach. “Transparency is essential to my creativity. It infuses soul into my work, forging connections with my audience and fostering relatability. Personally, it has offered me a sense of liberation, which in turn liberates my fans. I must remain true to what I believe is right for my art, enabling others to connect with it in my distinctive manner.”
K.Keed reflected on how her experiences performing at significant venues have informed her understanding of artistry. She highlighted the importance of preparation and respect for the craft. “Emerging from humble beginnings, performing at dream venues has truly shown me that achieving this dream is feasible. It has taught me the importance of engaging with the audience and being present. The experience has enriched my understanding of technical sound aspects, but most importantly, it has instilled in me the need for artists to respect the craft seriously. To be the best, one must learn from the best. I advise every artist to invest in performances, regardless of scale.”
On the subject of managing criticism and understanding diverse audiences, she noted, “I’ve come to realize that music is experienced differently across various regions. Each demographic engages with music in their own way, so do not take offense if someone doesn’t connect with your art. There are people who will appreciate it, and when you find your audience, they will support you wholeheartedly. Music and criticism are both subjective. Always maintain a broad perspective and don’t allow others’ opinions to dim your aspirations.”
Lastly, K.Keed discussed her role as a champion for young women in hip-hop and the messages she aims to impart through her music. “I want my fans to recognize that my work is intentional and driven by passion. Embracing vulnerability and relatability fosters the best art, so I urge everyone not to conceal who they are but to embrace it and share their story. Most importantly, I aim to empower other women in the hip-hop space to embrace their true selves. If I can pursue this path, they can too. Create art that you will cherish for years to come—something profound and reflective of who you are and what you stand for.”
