Wits University has awarded an honorary doctorate to Kaizer Motaung, the founder and chairman of Kaizer Chiefs. In 2022, the University of Cape Town also conferred an honorary doctorate in Social Sciences on Motaung. Now, Wits University has decided to honor him with an honorary doctorate, granting him the title of Doctor of Commerce.
He founded Kaizer Chiefs when he was just 27 years old and expresses satisfaction with his contributions to uplifting ordinary people.
“I’m very proud and happy to be part of this community. I’m no longer the ‘Chincha Guluva’ that people used to know as a player. But I can say Kaizer Chiefs determines the happy index of the country. A couple of weeks ago, we won a cup after approximately 10 years. The mood in the country changed; it felt like there was a World Cup being played. I’m very happy and proud to have contributed to making many people happy.”
Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Wits University, Professor Zeblon Vilakazi, states that Motaung’s life is a story in its own right. Vilakazi says, “Take a chance in life, be a creator. Dr. Motaung’s life story is, in itself, a message. He could have just stayed silent, and people would still have understood what he was talking about.”
Motaung, who was also involved in the bids for the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cups as well as the establishment of the Premier Soccer League, expresses concern over the trend of buying and selling PSL statuses.
“We probably need to implement strict rules that make it difficult for people to enter just because they have acquired some money somewhere, and then buy a status. That is an issue we need to address to ensure stability,” Motaung adds.
He expresses gratitude to the Amakhosi faithful.
“To the Amakhosi supporters, thank you for your passion, loyalty, and dedication,” Motaung states. He encourages young people not to be afraid to take calculated risks in life. Motaung climbed these stairways, symbolizing another important step in his remarkable life.
He is a pioneer, and his contributions to society are evident, as this year marks 55 years since he established the Kaizer Chiefs football club.
