Katlego Maboe, a prominent figure in South African media, has issued a warning after identifying a scam that utilizes artificial intelligence to impersonate him. This deceptive practice aims to mislead the public.
Recently, the television presenter went live on Instagram to inform his audience about a dubious advertisement making the rounds online, which appears to employ his image, voice, and name to endorse a fraudulent scheme.
Maboe conveyed his frustration about the increasing misuse of AI technologies, emphasizing that scammers are becoming more adept at exploiting the trust that people place in public figures.
“Be super careful. We live in an age where AI generates bot voice manipulation, and all kinds of crazy things are happening,” he said.
As outlined by Maboe, criminals are deploying sophisticated tools to imitate the identities of well-known figures, which facilitates the deception of unsuspecting individuals.
“All of these criminals and scammers are all trying to take money from people like you by using the faces, the names, the voices and images of people that you trust, and using it to manipulate you,” he explained.
He advised his followers to stay alert and reconsider any online offers or promotions that raise red flags.
“If it seems too good to be true, it most likely is,” Maboe cautioned.
