KwaZulu-Natal’s Police Chief Takes Stand Against Minister in Explosive Briefing
In a dramatic press briefing on Sunday, KwaZulu-Natal’s Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi alleged Police Minister Senzo Mchunu is interfering in policing, threatening the stability of the service. Mkhwanazi, asserting he is “combat-ready”, plans to file charges against Mchunu, revealing connections to high-level political corruption and organized crime.
Allegations of Political Interference in Policing
In a recent press briefing, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi alleged Police Minister Senzo Mchunu interfered in police operations, particularly by shutting down a key task force on political killings.
Mkhwanazi emphasized that he is prepared to take legal action against Mchunu, noting that the minister’s influence has reportedly led to critical investigations being stalled.
“Five of these dockets had instructions to arrest perpetrators, but nothing has been done; they are sitting in an archive in Pretoria,” Mkhwanazi stated in his address.
Defending Police Integrity Amidst Turmoil
During the briefing, Mkhwanazi defended Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola, dismissing the notion that Mchunu had the authority to dissolve police units without proper procedure.
He warned of a possible scheme targeting senior police officials, suggesting that attempts are underway to undermine the integrity of the force amid ongoing corruption issues.
Mkhwanazi stressed the importance of confronting crime, declaring, “We are in combat mode, directly confronting the criminals within the police ranks and beyond.”
In a dramatic statement filled with serious accusations, KwaZulu-Natal’s Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, emerged as a fierce defender of law enforcement integrity, claiming he is ready to face any adversary, including influential political figures. His allegations against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, accusing him of meddling in police operations and undermining investigations into political killings, shed light on a deeply troubling nexus of crime and power. Mkhwanazi’s remarks raise alarming questions about internal corruption and the ability of the police to carry out their fundamental duties without external interference.
