In South Africa, the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (PoPIA) imposes strict obligations on organizations to handle personal information in a lawful and secure manner. When employees use generative AI tools, particularly cloud-based platforms such as ChatGPT or Midjourney, there is a risk that they might inadvertently upload confidential, personal, or proprietary data to environments where control is lost.

Implementing an AI policy goes beyond being a progressive approach — it serves as a critical defense against the tangible and increasing risks associated with AI misuse, ranging from data leaks and compliance breaches to reputational harm.
