MultiChoice has reinstated a number of Leon Schuster’s classic films on its platforms, DStv and Showmax, after having previously delisted them due to concerns over perceived racial insensitivity.
The broadcaster initially removed the films in June 2020, amid the worldwide Black Lives Matter movement that was ignited by the death of George Floyd.
During this period, media outlets globally reevaluated content that might be considered offensive.

A significant factor in the decision was Schuster’s use of makeup and costumes in his comedic roles, where he played characters of various races, such as black and Indian individuals. This practice, sometimes referred to as blackface, was flagged as contentious.
In response to the situation, Showmax removed six Schuster films, which included
- Sweet n Short
- Oh Schucks, It’s Schuster
- You Must Be Joking
- You Must Be Joking Too
- Schucks… Pay Back The Money!
- Frank & Fearless
Additionally, MultiChoice prohibited Mr Bones, Mr Bones 2: Back from the Past, and Mama Jack. Upon reevaluation, only Frank & Fearless, which is Schuster’s 2018 comedy, was temporarily made available again.
At the time, Showmax stated that while the films were “products of their time” created with “positive intent,” it needed to find a balance between user sensitivity and its purpose as a unifying platform.
With the restrictions now lifted, viewers can once more enjoy Leon Schuster’s earlier films through streaming services. MultiChoice has yet to provide details on what motivated this policy adjustment.
