Softfootball reports that Marc-André ter Stegen, the captain of Barcelona, is close to securing a loan deal with Girona. According to Fabrizio Romano on his official X account, an agreement between the player and the club is nearly finalized.
He posted:
Girona are closing in on a deal to sign Marc André ter Stegen on a loan deal! Total agreement with the German GK who said YES to Girona. There are details to clarify with Barcelona on the loan move. Girona, hopeful to get it done next week. Deal close
The 33-year-old goalkeeper has agreed to the move, seeking more playing time ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Ter Stegen wants to impress the national team coach and secure a place in Germany’s squad for the summer.

Negotiations are nearing completion regarding a tripartite agreement between Barcelona, Girona, and Ter Stegen. Although the player has expressed his willingness to proceed, discussions are ongoing about the specifics, particularly the division of his salary.
Under manager Hansi Flick, Ter Stegen’s playing time at Barcelona has been limited. He has made only one appearance this season in a Copa del Rey match against Guadalajara since returning from back surgery that kept him out for seven months.

Flick opted to start Joan García in Barcelona’s 2-0 win over Racing Santander in the Copa del Rey, where García achieved a clean sheet, further highlighting Ter Stegen’s limited chances. With Wojciech Szczęsny also in the squad, Ter Stegen faces challenges in securing regular playing time at Camp Nou, despite his contract lasting until 2028.
The loan presents benefits for all involved. Ter Stegen can regain match fitness and increase his chances for national team selection. Girona gains a seasoned goalkeeper to bolster their efforts to stay in La Liga, while Barcelona alleviates financial pressure under the league’s Financial Fair Play regulations.
Moreover, the proximity of Barcelona and Girona allows Ter Stegen to remain close to his family.
