Naledi Aphiwe reacts to AFRIMA’s nod
Naledi Aphiwe has kicked off 2026 on a global note, receiving a notable nomination at the Ninth All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) in Lagos, Nigeria.
The 18-year-old artist has been recognized in the Best African Duo or Group in R&B category, alongside her collaborator Mawelele, highlighting another significant step in her burgeoning career.
Competing against renowned artists from across the continent, such as Nigeria’s Kunmie, Morocco’s Manal, and the eventual winner Rema, Naledi characterized the experience as uplifting and motivating.
“This nomination is an indication of great things to come this year. It shows that hard work will never go unnoticed,” she said.
“Seeing my name next to international artists means there is a place for me in the world and in other African countries.”
The recognition goes beyond mere accolades for Naledi.
Her transition from a local classroom to performing on major stages resonates with audiences, establishing her as one of South Africa’s standout young talents.
At her young age, she has already developed a significant portfolio that many artists aspire to achieve over many years.
Her rise has been consistent. In 2025, she received nominations for Best African Song and Best R&B Song at the Metro FM Music Awards for her track “Romeo & Juliet,” a collaboration with Mawelele.
The previous year, she was awarded the Afro Pop Artist of the Year at the Basadi Music Awards, which further enhanced her standing in the music scene.
