Nomsa Buthelezi shared a heartfelt account of the difficulties she has encountered as a lesbian in the South African entertainment industry.
A recent video that gained significant attention shows the former host of Our Perfect Wedding talking about the challenges she believes stem from being evaluated more on her sexual orientation than her talent.
With tears in her eyes, Buthelezi spoke about how her body image and sexual identity made her vulnerable to negative comments.
She recalled putting her best effort into auditions, aiming to let her skill take center stage.
“The show went up in numbers because of the 101% I brought. But when South Africa started applauding me because of my talent, they got upset and they went behind my back and lied about me,” she reported.
She detailed a troubling trend of jealousy and deceit, where some co-workers pretended to support her while they appropriated her ideas and distanced themselves.
“People hate me for my sexuality. It’s very tough because you lose jobs and gigs. They turned their backs on me and they forgot the talent and the actress that I am,” she continued.
Buthelezi did express gratitude for those who stood by her, recognizing her talent along the way.
“I never got justice, but I continued and worked. There were people God brought to my life for me to work with them because they believed in the actress and not what she looked like or who she is,” she commented, clearly moved.
