Former South African cricketer Ntaketo Mbhalati convicted in match-fixing case.

Former South African cricketer Ntaketo Ethy Mbhalati has been convicted of corruption related to the T20 match-fixing scandal of 2015-2016 by the Pretoria Specialized Commercial Crimes Court. Arrested in November 2024 alongside two others, he received a five-year suspended sentence, as stated by Hawks’ spokesperson Katlego Mogale.

Overview of the Match-Fixing Scandal

The T20 cricket match-fixing scandal of 2015 and 2016 implicated multiple players, including Ntaketo Ethy Mbhalati, raising serious concerns about integrity in South African cricket.

Reports emerged in 2016 when an anti-corruption official at Cricket South Africa received credible information regarding Mbhalati’s alleged involvement in match-fixing activities.

Mbhalati’s arrest in November 2024, alongside former players Tsotsobe and Tsolekile, marked a significant development in the ongoing investigations surrounding the scandal.

Legal Consequences and Suspension Terms

The Pretoria Specialized Commercial Crimes Court sentenced Mbhalati to a five-year prison term; however, the sentence was fully suspended for five years under specific conditions.

According to Hawks’ spokesperson Katlego Mogale, Mbhalati must avoid further convictions for similar offenses during the suspension period to prevent serving time.

The court’s ruling highlights the legal repercussions players face amid ongoing efforts to maintain the integrity of cricket, particularly regarding corruption and match-fixing.

In conclusion, Ntaketo Ethy Mbhalati’s conviction in the T20 match-fixing scandal highlights the serious consequences of corruption within sports. Though his five-year prison sentence is suspended, this case serves as a reminder of the importance of integrity in cricket.
