PSV Eindhoven has announced that defender Sergiño Dest will be unavailable for an extended period due to an upper leg injury sustained during their recent home match against AZ Alkmaar, as reported by Softfootball.
Following medical assessments conducted on Sunday, the injury was confirmed, but the club noted that it is challenging to estimate how long the 25-year-old will be out. The player, who has earned 37 caps for the United States men’s national team, aims to return as the season approaches its conclusion.
The club shared a message on their official x handle, in which Dest conveyed optimism about his recovery and his intent to regain full fitness before the season ends.

Medical Update Sergiño Dest PSV will be without Sergiño Dest for the coming period, medical examinations confirmed on Sunday. The 25-year-old defender was forced off during the home win against AZ with an upper leg injury. It is still difficult to predict exactly how long Dest will be sidelined.
The 37-time US international is aiming for a return towards the final phase of the season, with the World Cup next summer in the United States, Canada and Mexico as an important target.
“I will do everything within my power to be fully fit again towards the end of the season, and I’m confident that will happen,” Dest said. “Thank you for the many heartwarming messages. That support only gives me extra motivation to work hard on my recovery.”
The injury occurred during the second half of PSV’s game against AZ when Dest pursued defender Wouter Goes within his own penalty area. After sprinting, he abruptly grabbed his left hamstring and fell to the ground, clearly in distress.
Dest was seen shielding his eyes while on the turf and was substituted in the 57th minute. He needed assistance from two medical staff members and was unable to place weight on his left leg as he exited the field.
PSV head coach Peter Bosz acknowledged that the situation initially appeared serious.
He landed on the ground after a full sprint and grabbed his hamstring. That’s usually not good news.
Bosz elaborated.
This injury adds to Dest’s challenges, as he previously spent nearly 11 months recovering from a severe ACL injury sustained in April 2024 during his tenure at FC Barcelona, which kept him out of the 2024 Copa América.

Since then, Dest has regained his form at PSV and has become a key player for both his club and country. He has made 37 international appearances and started all four matches for the United States during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
With the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico next summer, achieving full fitness will be crucial for the right-back.
If Dest is unable to play for the national team, alternatives may include Tim Weah, currently with Juventus and on loan at Olympique de Marseille, as well as defenders Joe Scally and Alex Freeman.
Despite Dest’s injury, PSV secured a win against AZ thanks to a late goal from Ricardo Pepi. The striker found the net from close range in the 86th minute, notching his 10th league goal of the season and his 13th in all competitions from 26 appearances.
In other news, Barcelona received encouraging updates about young midfielder Marc Bernal, who avoided an injury scare related to stomach issues during the weekend match. The teenager is expected to be fully available next week.
Additionally, in transfer news, Arsenal is set to finalize the permanent transfer of Piero Hincapié from Bayer Leverkusen in June for €52 million, with the German club also securing a 10 percent sell-on clause as part of the deal.
