“He was the most loving, compassionate, friendly, open, decent human being, and it is a tragedy beyond belief.”

Entrepreneur Robert Hersov, a close friend of TV and radio figure Warrick Stock, also known as DJ Warras, expressed his sorrow over the media personality’s murder.

Affectionately referred to as the Shady Lurker, the 40-year-old was fatally shot outside Carlton City on Tuesday, December 16.

Initial reports suggest that after parking his car in Johannesburg’s inner city, Warras was confronted by three unidentified individuals who opened fire and then fled the scene.

Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, a spokesperson for the police, confirmed the incident: “It is alleged that the victim was approached by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they opened fire at him before fleeing the scene on foot. The motive for the shooting is currently unknown. No arrest has been made yet, and the investigation is underway.”

In reaction to the shocking news, Hersov took to X, reflecting on Warras as “a brother and friend.” He added, “Warras, we love you, we miss you, may you RIP, brother.”

On the same platform, The Kiffness shared a monochrome photograph of DJ Warras, captioning it: “RIP Warras @Shady_Lurker.”

Meanwhile, podcaster and media figure Sol Phenduka shared a cryptic message shortly before Warras’s death was confirmed: “Eh this country. The violence is too much. I hope the news I’m hearing isn’t true…” followed by, “Ey man Warras bro.”

Social media users like @GodPenuel expressed their grief with the following message: “DJ Warras, Warrick Stock. Loving father. Deep South African patriot. A passionate Zulu man. A fucking awesome brother. Hard worker. No-nonsense straight talker. Love you bro. Fuck…”

@Mzansimagic remarked: “DJ Warras was more than a host. Thank you for the laughter, the stories, and the unforgettable Mzansi Magic moments. Your legacy will live on.”

@mjimero also posted: “They can kill you, but they will never take the patriotism in you. Rest, Patriot. We will remember you not only as our beloved DJ but as a patriot who was fighting against the crimes happening in this country. Rest well, DJ Warras.”

Born in Durban, Warras started his media career in radio and gained recognition in 2008 upon joining YFM. He later transitioned to 5FM and became a long-standing presenter for SABC1’s music program Live AMP, a role he held for roughly six years.

In recent times, he co-hosted The Shady PHodcast alongside DJ PH and earlier this year, he was the host of the local reality show Ngicel’iVisa.

He is survived by three sons.
