The budget aims to ensure global competitiveness and opportunity for athletes by allocating R1.2 billion to sports, as he confidently pushes for the return of Formula One to Kyalami.

Allocation of R6.3 Billion Budget Focused on Sports and Development

The budget of R6.3 billion for the 2025/2026 financial year emphasizes recreation, development, and sports promotion, aiming to enhance local talent and competitiveness globally.

In total, R98.5 million is designated for federations, along with plans for a new shared office building to enhance cooperation among sports organizations.

Plans to Revitalize Formula One in South Africa

Minister McKenzie’s confidence in Formula One’s return is bolstered by Kyalami’s recent approval from the FIA for a Grade 1 circuit upgrade, essential for hosting F1 events.

He clarified that discussions with F1 management are ongoing, emphasizing the country’s necessity to host the event for maintaining its sports prestige.

“We cannot afford not to host F1,” McKenzie asserted, linking South Africa’s previous success with the FIFA World Cup to potential future gains with Formula One.

In a bold declaration, McKenzie expresses unwavering confidence in the return of Formula One racing to South Africa, citing recent upgrades to the Kyalami racetrack and the importance of maintaining high international standards in motorsports.

With a commitment to invest R1.2 billion in sports support, and an emphasis on opportunity for talented individuals, the government aims to sustain competitive excellence and cultural vibrancy within the nation.

The budget includes significant allocations for job creation within the arts, reflecting a comprehensive approach to nurture and showcase South African talent on both local and global stages.
