Erasmus Names 54 for Springboks’ Season Kickoff vs. Barbarians

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has announced a training squad of 54 players for the international season opener against the Barbarians in Cape Town on June 28. This squad mirrors those who participated in last month’s alignment camp and features 31 Rugby World Cup veterans alongside nine uncapped talents, with preparations beginning Monday in Johannesburg.

Springboks Announce Training Squad for Upcoming Season

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has retained the same 54 players from the previous national alignment camp. The squad will prepare for the opening match against the Barbarians on June 28.

The training squad consists of 31 Rugby World Cup players, indicating strong continuity in the team. This depth aims to enhance the squad’s performance in the international season.

Erasmus emphasized, “We are excited about the talent and experience in this squad, which will be essential as we prepare for what lies ahead this season.”

Focus on Uncapped Players in the Springbok Squad

Among the 54 players, nine are uncapped, including hooker Marnus van der Merwe and prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye. Their inclusion reflects the coaching staff’s commitment to developing new talent.

This season presents a valuable opportunity for these players. Coach Erasmus noted, “Integrating fresh faces will bolster team dynamics and provide depth as we face rigorous international challenges.”

Players are set to join the camp in a staggered fashion due to ongoing club commitments. Available members will begin on-field preparations in Johannesburg on Monday.

In summary, Rassie Erasmus has retained the same 54 players from the previous camp for the Springbok training squad, highlighting a mix of experienced World Cup veterans and promising new talents as they prepare for the opening match against the Barbarians.
