Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba has announced that the triplets born to a 33-year-old woman from Dzumeri Village, located near Giyani, were delivered prematurely.
The infants—two girls and one boy—came into the world via caesarean section on April 21, after only 34 weeks of gestation. Since a typical pregnancy spans from 37 to 42 weeks, this indicates the babies were born roughly six weeks early.
Ramathuba provided this update during a visit to Letaba Hospital in Nkowankowa, Tzaneen, where she was accompanied by Health MEC Dieketseng Mashego. She noted that the mother’s pre-existing medical conditions contributed to the high-risk nature of the pregnancy.
Tragically, provincial health officials have reported that two of the newborns did not survive. The only surviving baby, along with the mother, has been moved to Mankweng Tertiary Hospital for advanced medical treatment.
This incident underscores the difficulties linked to premature births and high-risk pregnancies, especially in cases involving multiples.
