Tyla beats Burna Boy, Wizkid and Tems to win second MTV VMA
The South African sensation Tyla Laura Seethal is solidifying her position on the international scene after winning the Best Afrobeats accolade at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards.
This 23-year-old artist from Johannesburg emerged victorious against formidable competitors, including Nigerian stars Burna Boy, Rema, Wizkid, and Tems.
The prestigious event unfolded on a Sunday at the UBS Arena in New York, where Tyla stunned attendees in a vintage Chanel ensemble from the Spring/Summer 1993 collection, featuring a chic beige minidress styled with a cropped top, complemented by black shorts and gold medallion accessories.
With a radiant smile, she exclaimed: “I am excited; honestly, this is amazing. The category was very tough, so shoutout to all the nominees, and shoutout to Africa, my team. It is just a blessing to be here, winning another award, so special.”
This achievement signifies Tyla’s second consecutive win in this category, after her previous success in 2024 with the hit track Water, which initially launched her into notoriety.
Additionally, she mentioned her specific fashion inspiration for the night: “With this outfit, I said, ‘put me in Chanel,’” she chuckled.
The promising artist received nominations in two categories—Best Afrobeats and Best Choreography for her song Push 2 Start.
She also hinted at an upcoming project, stating: “It is coming, and it’s coming in hot, like, for real; just keep an eye out, but for now, keep an eye out for Chanels coming soon.”
This recent accolade contributes to her expanding list of achievements, which already encompasses a Grammy for Best African Music Performance in 2024 and a role as a host at the Kids’ Choice Awards.
