Uncovering the Origin: DJ Maphorisa Explains the Scorpion Kings' Name

DJ Maphorisa finally explains origin of Scorpion Kings name

DJ Maphorisa has clarified the story behind the renowned title, Scorpion Kings.

During a recent interview with Metro FM on August 12, 2025, the producer discussed how he and his longtime associate Kabza De Small solidified their collaboration in the budding Amapiano scene.

“Kabza had a plan to drop an album. We had a few songs that were hot at the time, and I compiled a quick list and told them, ‘Let’s drop this and call it Scorpion Kings,’” Maphorisa explained.

The title, he mentioned, was inspired by his zodiac sign.

“I’m a Scorpio, but Kabza was born on the 26th of November (Sagittarius). I was just rushing through everything and didn’t give it much thought,” he admitted with a laugh.

While astrology wasn’t a primary consideration for them in the beginning, the name became unforgettable and quickly came to represent chart-topping tracks and sold-out performances.

Since their inaugural project, Scorpion Kings EP, the duo has evolved into one of South Africa’s most prominent musical treasures.
