Unveiling Harmony: K Zaka, Uncool Angels, and Philharmonic Celebrate Unity in ‘Mngani Wam’

Unity in Sound: K Zaka and Uncool Angels Unite with the Philharmonic in 'Mngani Wam'

“Mngani Wam” is more than a song; it represents a sincere exploration of friendship, loyalty, and the idea of chosen family. This collaboration between K-Zaka, Uncool Angels, and Philharmonic manifests the unity and artistic exchange central to the BAL’ING ON THE CONTINENT initiative. In their conversation with The Yanos Magazine, the musicians discuss the real-life connections that inspired the track and the cultural movement they proudly associate with.

1. “Mngani Wam” translates to “my friend”. What personal or shared experiences inspired the message behind this song?

“The truth is that the _Uncool Angels_ consists of two beautiful ladies that have been in each other’s lives for almost a decade (10 years). Growing up alongside each other, sharing experiences, and consistently supporting one another serves as the muse for this lovely song, Mngani wami. When _Philharmonic_ and K-Zaka entered our lives through RosePearlEnt, our friendship blossomed further as we traveled for shows, went on studio camps, and engaged in creativity together.”

2. How did the collaboration between K-Zaka, Uncool Angels, and Philharmonic come together under the BAL’ING ON THE CONTINENT project?

“We worked on several songs together. With K-Zaka’s versatility in music and production, we embraced the Afro Amapiano sound and decided to create a song embodying the friendship developed throughout our journeys, including newer friendships we formed while collaborating under RosePearl Entertainment with K-Zaka and Philharmonic. This project is more about the camaraderie among friends than just producing music.”

3. The production is stripped-back yet emotionally rich. Why was a minimalist sound important for this particular story?

“While I can’t claim it’s purely minimalist, our approach in producing the song focused on conveying its message and awareness of the joy surrounding our time spent together doing what we love.”

4. Friendship and chosen family are central themes. How do these ideas reflect your own journeys as artists?

“It’s significant to acknowledge that our friendship marks a decade this year. We first met in the entertainment industry as professional dancers, enduring various transitions such as motherhood and relationship changes. We have since evolved into artists, partners in business, and friends, striving to create a better future for our children through our art and talent. Our bond is not merely one of friendship; it is a sisterhood.”

5. BAL’ING ON THE CONTINENT was inspired by AfroFuture’s travels during the Basketball Africa League Season 5. How did movement across Africa influence the music creatively?

“Music serves as a universal language that supports us through life. As young individuals, we actively pursue the idea of pan-Africanism, and music, sports, and dance present the perfect means to achieve this. That’s the essence of BAL’ING ON THE CONTINENT.”

6. AfroFuture has positioned this project as a cultural movement rather than just a compilation. What does that mean to you as contributors?

“It’s remarkable because we can showcase our unique style and cultural richness on a global scale. We believe that music, in all its diversity, unites people through a common language. Being part of this cultural movement fills us with pride.”

7. How do you feel Afrohouse and Amapiano continue to serve as powerful vehicles for storytelling and emotional expression?

“From what I understand, Afrohouse has roots in African drumming, long associated with celebrations and joy. Over time, it has incorporated new elements, evolving into Afrohouse and Amapiano, renowned for their unifying dance and movement qualities. This evolution allows us to communicate and express ourselves through both music and dance.”

8. Each of you comes from a distinct background and sound. What did you learn from one another during this collaboration?

“We’ve learned that anything is achievable. Exploring various sounds and remaining versatile within musical genres is important, and we should not limit ourselves to just one style.”

9. The project uses music as a bridge to promote basketball and pan-African unity. Why is this intersection between music, culture, and sport important right now?

“Music has the unique ability to bring people together and advocate for pan-Africanism, serving as a tool for creating lasting memories and enriching experiences through dance and sound. Our goal is for everyone to associate BAL’NING ON THE CONTINENT, basketball, and BAL Season 5 with the song Mngani Wami.”

10. With “Mngani Wam” setting the tone, what can fans of Amapiano and Afrohouse expect from the rest of the BAL’ING ON THE CONTINENT project?

Listeners can anticipate an exciting mix of sounds and collaborations from the BAL’ING ON THE CONTINENT project. “Mngani Wam” establishes a warm and reflective atmosphere, highlighting themes of loyalty, companionship, and chosen family. The project aims to present diverse artists and producers from throughout Africa, emphasizing the continent’s rich musical traditions.

With “Mngani Wam” leading the way, fans can look forward to vibrant collaborations and a variety of Afrohouse and Amapiano sounds that celebrate Africa’s collective identity and creative spirit.
