Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala
Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, a businessman embroiled in several serious criminal accusations, has been relocated to the eBongweni Correctional Facility located in Kokstad, KwaZulu-Natal, which is recognized as one of South Africa’s most secure prisons.
The Correctional Services Department verified that Matlala was transferred on December 21, 2025, from the C-Max unit at Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre in Pretoria.
The newly assigned supermax facility is known for its rigorous security protocols, advanced monitoring technology, and stringent controls for high-risk prisoners.
eBongweni is widely considered to be South Africa’s most formidable correctional institution, with a history of few escape attempts since its inception, which has solidified its status as a facility for particularly dangerous offenders.
Spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services, Singabakho Nxumalo, stated that the transfer should not be perceived as unusual and clarified that inmate movements are standard procedures.
“The transfer falls within routine operational practice, guided by considerations of security, safety, operational requirements and effective inmate management,” Nxumalo explained.
He further mentioned that such actions are covered under section 6 of the Correctional Services Act and indicated that the department would not reveal additional information about the specific security factors that led to the decision.
Matlala has been incarcerated since May 2025 and is facing an array of charges, which include attempted murder, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit murder.
The public has shown significant interest in his case, particularly due to links with an alleged assassination attempt on his former partner, actress Tebogo Thobejane.
The proceedings are set to continue in the Johannesburg High Court in January 2026.
Although the department has provided limited commentary on the recent transfer, this action highlights its commitment to ensuring tight security for inmates who pose heightened risks.
