In an impressive display of leadership and skill, South Africa’s stand-in captain Wiaan Mulder scored an unbeaten 264, setting a new record for the highest score by a debut test skipper on Sunday in Bulawayo against Zimbabwe. He led his team to 465 for four on the first day of the second test, showcasing remarkable resilience and technique after taking over the captaincy due to Keshav Maharaj’s injury. Mulder’s performance marks a historical achievement, surpassing the previous record of 239 set by Graham Dowling in 1967. His remarkable innings included a second fasted double century by a South African, demonstrating his crucial role in building a solid foundation for his team’s batting effort.

Wiaan Mulder Sets New Captaincy Record

Wiaan Mulder scored an unbeaten 264 runs, marking the highest score for a debuting Test captain. This surpassed Graham Dowling’s 239 runs from 1967, a significant historical achievement.

Mulder expressed his pride in the accomplishment, stating, “It’s an honor to lead this team and contribute significantly. The conditions favored batting, and I capitalized on that.”

The 27-year-old all-rounder, stepping up as captain after Keshav Maharaj’s injury, guided South Africa to a strong total of 465 on the opening day against Zimbabwe.

South Africa’s Robust Performance Against Zimbabwe

South Africa dominated the first day of the second Test, reaching 465 for four, with Mulder and his teammates delivering an impressive showing despite missing key players.

Teenager Lhuan-dre Pretorius added to the excitement with a quickfire 78 runs. Mulder and Pretorius built a crucial partnership of 217 runs.

Captain Mulder noted the importance of a solid start, emphasizing teamwork in overcoming early setbacks. He stated, “We knew we had to adapt quickly after losing early wickets.”


Wiaan Mulder’s remarkable unbeaten double century not only set a record for the highest score by a debuting test captain but also showcased his leadership and skill, leading South Africa to a formidable position in the second test against Zimbabwe.

With an impressive 264 runs, Mulder demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure, especially as a stand-in captain, signaling a bright future for South Africa’s cricket despite the absence of key players from the World Test Championship victory.
