Rashid Kay, who plays a crucial role in curating the Back To The City hip-hop music festival, has been instrumental in promoting both underground and mainstream talent. His efforts have drawn attention to artists like ProVerb and shaped festival lineups that engage the public.

Unlike many who receive awards, Kay is not recognized for viral hits or social media dominance. Instead, he has established himself as a key curator and connector within the South African hip-hop scene, serving to link underground talent with mainstream audiences.

As the co-founder of the renowned Back to the City festival, Rashid Kay has consistently showcased new artists while providing a platform for seasoned veterans in the genre. His early support for talents such as ProVerb, coupled with his incisive critiques of festival lineups, has garnered him both respect and some controversy.

This year has marked a significant period of recognition for Rashid. After his insights during the Metro FM Music Awards, where he criticized radio leaders for prioritizing pop over hip-hop, this honorary award appears to provide well-deserved acknowledgment from the industry. Timeline Radio, which is committed to nurturing true hip-hop culture, has recognized Rashid Kay’s ongoing dedication to fostering talent and influencing the nation’s musical landscape.
