As we approach Father\u2019s Day, a film focusing on the themes of fatherhood titled Playing Dad<\/em> has made its debut. This seventh installment in the Heartlines Father\u2019s Matter<\/em> series premiered this Wednesday at Hyde Park in Johannesburg.<\/p>\n

THE PLOT DRIVING \u2018PLAYING DAD\u2019<\/h2>\n

The narrative revolves around Mpendulo, a disciplined carpenter who suddenly finds himself caring for his young child, Ndumiso. While navigating challenges such as storytelling at bedtime, Mpendulo discovers that playtime isn\u2019t solely reserved for the young. He realizes that this playful interaction can forge a strong connection between fathers and their sons. Just when their relationship deepens, a critical incident at Ndumiso\u2019s early childhood center threatens to impact their development as a father-son duo.<\/p>\n

THE ACTOR WHO PLAYS THE LEAD, IN \u2018PLAYING DAD\u2019<\/h3>\n

Vincent Mahlape takes on the lead role of Mpendulo in this film. He expressed how the script captivated him, stating, \u201cIt is a story that addresses social issues,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe witness this daily in our communities. I wanted to delve into Mpendulo\u2019s journey and grasp what he perceives fatherhood to be compared to the reality of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mahlape noted that significant internal struggles often emerge from one\u2019s childhood and upbringing, which shape fathers into the men they become; he believes this illustrates Mpendulo’s character.<\/p>\n

\u201cMpendulo serves as a reflection for many men to evaluate whether they are satisfied with what they see or if they wish to enact change within themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

PREPARING FOR THE ROLE<\/h3>\n

Mahlape took a thorough and reflective approach to embody this character, involving deep self-examination.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis does not include judging him. It was about grasping Mpendulo\u2019s upbringing, his family connections, desires, shortcomings, and so forth.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll these nuances then shape how I portray the character, drawing from my own knowledge and observations in everyday life. I build upon that and give him his physicality, including his gait, mannerisms, voice, speech patterns, and personality traits,\u201d he detailed.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo man is flawless, but I believe that through committing to self-improvement, we can approach it. As a young father myself, I am continually learning about myself, my child, and the concept of fatherhood. The film provided me with insights that I otherwise wouldn\u2019t have encountered.\u201d<\/p>\n

He shared that he discovered the importance of physically kneeling down to his child’s level and maintaining eye contact to effectively communicate while fostering a secure environment for his child.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe role also taught me that fatherhood is a journey, and while challenges will arise, how one navigates those issues is crucial.\u201d<\/p>\n

HOW THE CAST AND CREW CAME TOGETHER TO CREATE<\/h3>\n

The enthusiastic lead actor remarked that collaborating with Eric Mogale, the director and producer of the film, was a delightful experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis energy is contagious. Eric is a highly engaged and collaborative director, creating a familial atmosphere among the cast and crew. His insight into working with children was invaluable during our scenes featuring our young star, Siyamthanda [Nxumalo].<\/p>\n

\u201cHe had a clear vision for the narrative while allowing the cast to immerse themselves thoughtfully and unapologetically in each scene, which facilitated tapping into various emotional moments that can be quite demanding.\u201d<\/p>\n

WHAT DIRECTING PLAYING DAD WAS LIKE<\/h3>\n

\u201cMy connection with Fathers Matter<\/em> comes from my passion for storytelling,\u201d Mogale explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cParticularly regarding complex social issues. My experience as both a director and producer has equipped me with the skills necessary to tackle sensitive subjects like fatherhood and traditional customs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mogale shared that significant research was conducted to ensure the film’s authenticity.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had to visit early childhood development centers and spent days there to truly feel the environment. It was vital to grasp the challenges both children and fathers face out there.\u201d<\/p>\n

CRAFTING AN ENVIRONMENT FOR CREATIVITY<\/h2>\n

He was excited about the atmosphere he, along with his cast and crew, managed to create on set.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was one of the most beautiful sets I have ever worked on. We faced the usual difficulties of strict schedules while ensuring the little ones had sufficient breaks since they have specific time constraints.\u201d<\/p>\n

He had nothing but accolades for the actors involved in this project.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese actors required minimal direction. Collaborating with young talents and helping them navigate emotionally charged scenes where they need to cry was challenging. However, guiding them into and out of those moments was rewarding. We managed to achieve those emotional peaks easily.\u201d<\/p>\n

He noted that his lead actor was fantastic to work with and easy to direct. Mogale mentioned that they had nearly concluded their search for the lead role when their casting director introduced two additional submissions, including Mahlape\u2019s audition.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs soon as we watched Vincent\u2019s audition tape, we paused and took a seat. It was clear he was the one. His timing and performance… he doesn\u2019t overact. It makes directing so much simpler.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mahlape hopes this film inspires a sense of hope in its viewers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a film designed to provoke discussions about fatherhood in the contemporary world. It emphasizes the themes of fatherhood, accountability, learning, and unlearning.\u201d<\/p>\n

Playing Dad<\/em> will be available on the Heartlines<\/em> website starting June 13.<\/p>\n
