South African artist Prince Kaybee has recently ignited excitement within Zimbabwe\u2019s music industry.<\/p>\n

In a widely shared post, he acknowledged the talent present in the nation but expressed a critical opinion: \u201cThe problem isn\u2019t quality\u2026 it\u2019s the sound.\u201d<\/p>\n

What is hindering Zimbabwean music?<\/h2>\n

Prince Kaybee<\/a> specifically referenced Zimdancehall, describing it as \u201ctoo layered, too niche\u201d and claiming that it fails to resonate outside Zimbabwe\u2019s borders.<\/p>\n

Zimdancehall represents Zimbabwe\u2019s interpretation of dancehall, yet it transcends mere imitation. This indigenous genre captures the essence of life in the ghetto, featuring lyrics in Shona, local slang, and tackling a spectrum of themes from hardship to love.<\/p>\n

Views on Prince Kaybee\u2019s remarks about Zimbabwean music are mixed; some consider his words disrespectful, while others agree he is simply articulating an uncomfortable truth.<\/p>\n

Prince Kaybee\u2019s Candid Opinion<\/h2>\n

The discussion began on X when a user @tabanimcgucci<\/a> remarked that Zimbabwean music had \u201cno export value\u201d and labeled it \u201cmid,\u201d especially when compared to the continuous influx of South African musicians profiting from gigs in Zimbabwe.
\n\u201cSA artistes are making money from Zimbabwe,\u201d Tabani stated. \u201cWhen Zim artistes go abroad, they only perform for Zimbabweans. That\u2019s how mid our music is.\u201d<\/p>\n

This post ignited a heated debate, prompting Prince Kaybee to chime in.
\n\u201cI\u2019ve been to Zim many times, stayed there for a month while recording The 4th Republic,\u201d he shared. \u201cYou guys have world-class engineers and songwriters, the problem isn\u2019t quality.\u201d<\/p>\n

He identified Zimdancehall as the core issue. \u201cIt\u2019s a subgenre of a subgenre. It doesn\u2019t translate commercially in South Africa,\u201d he clarified.<\/p>\n

He also noted that the dancehall elements are being inappropriately infused into various genres, including Amapiano, resulting in a muddled hybrid that fails to resonate.
