Former FC Barcelona coach Xavi Hern\u00e1ndez has suggested that club president Joan Laporta played a pivotal role in preventing Lionel Messi’s return to the team three years ago.<\/p>\n

As reported by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano on his official X account<\/a>, Xavi stated that a deal for Messi to rejoin Camp Nou following Argentina’s 2022 World Cup victory was practically finalized.<\/p>\n

Romano\u2019s statement:<\/p>\n

Xavi: \u201cLeo Messi is never returning to Barcelona simply because Laporta doesn\u2019t want that\u201d. \u201cIt not because of La Liga or Jorge Messi is asking for money, that\u2019s all a lie\u201d, told La Vanguardia. \u201cIt\u2019s Laporta who is telling his camp that the club can\u2019t afford him\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Xavi elaborated that Laporta personally communicated to him that the decision against finalizing the move was due to financial concerns and possible wage disputes within the squad.<\/p>\n

\u201cLaporta told me that if Leo came back, there would be a wage war and he couldn\u2019t afford that,\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
