Generations<\/em> producer Mfundi Vundla has at last spoken out after the infamous dismissal of the entire cast of the soap opera more than a decade ago.<\/p>\n

At 79 years old, he is participating in interviews as the show marks its 32nd year on-air. Its popularity has transcended South Africa, resonating throughout the African continent.<\/p>\n

During a conversation with Thando Thabethe on her 5FM<\/a> program, she inquired about the events leading to the firing of the entire original cast of Generations<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m shooting a scene with Menzi Ngubane, and right in the middle of the scene, while the scene is being shot, Thato [Molamu] walks into the scene\u2026 whispers something in Ngubane\u2019s ear. Menzi drops everything and walks out,\u201d begins the Generations producer.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt becomes clear that the issue is that they\u2019re not happy with the fact that they\u2019re not getting royalties.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd my response is\u2026 that\u2019s a legitimate issue, but there\u2019s no line item in my budget that says \u2018actor\u2019s royalties\u2019. Royalties are paid by the broadcaster\u2026 I don\u2019t own the show. It\u2019s owned by the broadcaster, so the onus with royalties lies with the broadcaster,\u201d Vundla explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo basically, what they were doing, given my name and maybe my stature, they wanted me to go fight their battle, and I refused,\u201d Vundla added.<\/p>\n

\u2018Fight your own battles as actors\u2019<\/h2>\n

\u201cWhy did you refuse, baba?\u201d Thabethe pressed him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are actors, you go and fight your own battles. I have my own battles to fight as a producer\u2026 I have a contract I have to deliver to the SABC, and them being on strike puts me in breach of contract,\u201d Vundla clarified.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I said \u2018I\u2019m not gonna be in breach\u2019\u2026 I gave them a deadline to return to work\u2026 they didn\u2019t turn up, and I said, \u2018Well, bye.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI created a show that I was extremely proud of. It\u2019s my dream. Nobody\u2019s gonna mess my dream\u2026 \u201d Vundla concluded.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
