Asha Bhosle, the iconic Indian playback singer known for her significant contribution to Bollywood music during the 1970s and 80s, passed away on Sunday in Mumbai at the age of 92, as confirmed by her family.<\/p>\n

The two-time Grammy nominee died at Breach Candy hospital, where she had been receiving treatment for “extreme exhaustion” and a chest infection.<\/p>\n

“My mother passed away today (Sunday). Her last rites will be held tomorrow at Shivaji Park in Mumbai,” stated her son Anand Bhosle in comments to the press.<\/p>\n

Over her remarkable seven-decade career, Bhosle recorded an impressive tally of more than 12,000 songs in various Indian languages.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over her demise, stating he was “deeply saddened” by the news.<\/p>\n

In a message shared on X, he remarked, “Her extraordinary musical journey, spanning decades, enriched our cultural heritage and touched countless hearts across the world.”<\/p>\n

He added, “She will continue to inspire generations and her songs will forever echo in people’s lives.”<\/p>\n

Bhosle was born on September 8, 1933, into a musical household and began her singing career as a child, alongside her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, following their father’s passing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Though often likened to Mangeshkar\u2014who was affectionately called “India’s Nightingale” before her passing in 2022\u2014Bhosle carved out her own distinctive identity, exploring a wide array of genres from pop to folk.<\/p>\n

Her early years involved significant challenges, including a difficult marriage at the age of 16.<\/p>\n

She rose to become one of the most celebrated and versatile voices in Indian cinema, honored with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2001, along with two Grammy nominations.<\/p>\n

Bhosle maintained her collaborations with international artists even in her later years, featuring in the recent album “The Mountain” (“Parvat”) by the British virtual band Gorillaz.<\/p>\n

In addition to her musical talents, she pursued her love for cuisine, opening her “Asha’s” restaurant chain in both Dubai and Britain.<\/p>\n
