At 36, Themba Zwane is set to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, an event that many South Africans view as the fitting conclusion to a celebrated career in football.

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos revealed his final 26-player roster during a notable event at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, where President Cyril Ramaphosa welcomed the national team before their trip to Mexico City.

While the announcement brought joy for some athletes, it also led to disappointment for others, as Broos narrowed his preliminary 32-man squad down to the team that will represent South Africa at this prestigious tournament.

A significant point of discussion was the selection of veteran midfielder Themba Zwane, whose seasoned presence and leadership qualities continue to earn him respect in South African football.

After the announcement, social media was abuzz, with fans expressing admiration for Zwane’s perseverance and steadiness. His inclusion was considered highly emotional by many supporters, especially since this could be his last chance at a FIFA World Cup.

Broos acknowledged that the selection phase was among the most challenging since he assumed his role as Bafana coach, indicating that several players who played vital roles in the qualification process narrowly missed out on the final list.

Players omitted from the preliminary squad include Brandon Petersen, Thabiso Monyane, Lebohang Maboe, Broeklyn Poggenpoel, and Patrick Maswanganyi. These omissions have sparked heated discussions among fans online.

Despite facing criticism from some supporters regarding certain choices, Broos maintains that the final squad possesses the necessary balance, discipline, and mindset to compete against the top teams in the world.

This marks South Africa’s return to the FIFA World Cup after a 16-year hiatus, making it a monumental occasion for both players and fans alike.

For Zwane, the tournament represents much more. After years of dedication and excellence in South African football, he now has one last chance to showcase his talent on the grand stage.
