The recently knighted British actor Sir Idris Elba has addressed ongoing speculations that have surrounded him for more than ten years \u2013 the notion that he might be cast as the iconic fictional Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) agent, James Bond.<\/p>\n

First introduced in 1953 by author Ian Fleming, James Bond \u2013 whose code number is 007<\/strong> and famously orders his Vodka Martini \u201cshaken, not stirred\u201d \u2013 has been portrayed over the years by numerous prominent British actors.<\/p>\n

In order of appearance, the role of Bond has been played by Sean Connery (1962\u20131967, 1971, 1983), George Lazenby (1969), Roger Moore (1973\u20131985), Timothy Dalton (1987\u20131989), Pierce Brosnan (1995\u20132002) and Daniel Craig (2006\u20132021), with Aaron Taylor-Johnson<\/a> currently viewed as the top contender for the next James Bond.<\/p>\n

For a long time, Elba has been mentioned as a suitable candidate for the role, yet little has come from the surrounding chatter.<\/p>\n

Elba has finally shared his perspective on the matter during an interview with British GQ<\/a>, conveying that not only are fans not prepared for a black, African individual to represent Bond but that trying to align the franchise with contemporary societal trends is unrealistic.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was never legit. It was always just a rumour\u2026 I\u2019ve always felt that it\u2019s not a realistic thing,\u201d he expressed during the conversation.<\/p>\n

\u201cJames Bond was written how he was written for a reason. But I was complimented by it. And also, I think, in realistic terms, some markets just don\u2019t go for that. Bond is big all over the world. And [audiences] won\u2019t [all] go for a Black male, an African male, playing Bond. That\u2019s not what they like in their culture. Period,\u201d Elba elaborated.<\/p>\n

\u201cBond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let\u2019s not try and make it woke. I think you\u2019ve got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don\u2019t try and answer the world\u2019s taste. Just be Bond.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
