The action in Group B of the 2026 FIFA World Cup commences on Friday, June 12, 2026, when co-hosts Canada host Bosnia and Herzegovina at BMO Field in a significant match.

The tournament kicks off on the evening of June 11, 2026, with the Mexico national football team facing South Africa. FIFA has also confirmed via their official X account that there will be a Record of 1,248 Players for Historic World Cup.

This match signifies the first men’s FIFA World Cup game held in Canada, as Jesse Marsch’s team looks to start strongly before their home fans. Canada qualified automatically as co-hosts, coming into the tournament with high hopes after an impressive series of performances.

In contrast to their previous World Cup appearances, the Canadian team enters this event undefeated in the 2026 qualifying rounds and is currently enjoying an eight-match unbeaten run. A sturdy defense has played a pivotal role in this achievement, with Les Rouges achieving six clean sheets in that span.

Although they have not historically won a World Cup game, having lost all six of their past tournament matches, Canada sees this as their best chance to etch a significant milestone. They have also gone unbeaten in their last six encounters against European teams, offering further optimism ahead of the upcoming match.

Their opponents, Bosnia and Herzegovina, secured their qualification dramatically, managing to prevail over both Italy and Wales after penalty shootouts during the playoffs.

Under the management of Sergej Barbarez, the Bosnian team is also on an eight-game unbeaten streak, securing a solid defensive record by conceding no more than a single goal in their last six outings.

This marks Bosnia and Herzegovina’s second participation in the World Cup, following their debut in 2014, when they narrowly missed advancing to the knockout stage. The team is determined to better that performance and leave a mark against one of the host nations.

With both teams coming into this match in top form and riding impressive unbeaten streaks, the showdown in Toronto promises to be a closely fought contest as Group B kicks off.

Team News

Alphonso Davies, the Canadian captain, is a doubt for Friday due to a hamstring strain. Jayden Nelson will replace Marcelo Flores, who suffered an ACL rupture with Tigres, while Moise Bombito is also unlikely to play as he is not yet fully recovered from a left tibia injury.

Maxime Crepeau, who missed the previous World Cup due to a broken leg, has been named the starting goalkeeper for Canada, and Jonathan Osorio aims to feature for his local team.

Jonathan David, the record goalscorer, is just one goal away from reaching 40 and can equal Mark Watson for ninth place in all-time caps for the national team on Friday. Additionally, Cyle Larin and Osorio are tied for second place in all-time appearances with 90 each.

Despite dealing with an ankle injury towards the season’s end, Haris Tabakovic has been included in the Bosnian squad, though he is doubtful for Friday’s match.

Bosnia’s captain, Edin Dzeko, was benched during their final friendly against Panama (which ended 1-1) and missed training on Tuesday, casting doubt over his participation due to a shoulder injury.

The sole goal against Panama came from Nikola Katic, marking his second for the senior team and his first international goal this year.
