POLOKWANE<\/strong> \u2013 A comprehensive police operation in Limpopo\u2019s Sekhukhune District has led to the apprehension of 95 individuals suspected of illegal immigration. In addition, law enforcement officials seized an unlicensed firearm, smuggled cigarettes, and tools believed to be associated with illegal mining.<\/p>\n

This extensive operation occurred over two days, from Thursday to Friday, as members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), along with specialized units and intelligence support, focused on curbing criminal activities in various locations throughout the district.<\/p>\n

These efforts are part of Operation Shanela 2, a national initiative designed to confront issues such as illegal immigration, organized crime, and unlawful mining practices.<\/p>\n

Targeted Operation in Ga-Mpusheng Village<\/h2>\n

The first set of actions took place in Ga-Mpusheng Village in the Atok area, where police from different units in the Sekhukhune District collaborated with K9 teams from Masemola and Public Order Policing personnel from Burgersfort.<\/p>\n

This operation resulted in the arrests of 15 individuals, which included nine nationals from Zimbabwe, four from Mozambique, one from Lesotho, and one from Ethiopia.<\/p>\n

Among those taken into custody was a 43-year-old Ethiopian man facing several charges, such as violations of the Immigration Act, possession of illegal cigarettes, and having a firearm without a license.<\/p>\n

Evidence collected during the operation suggested that the actions of those arrested extended beyond immigration issues.<\/p>\n

Authorities found an unlicensed firearm along with its magazine, boxes of suspected smuggled cigarettes, and various tools thought to be used for illegal mining.<\/p>\n

Seized Illegal Mining Equipment<\/h2>\n

Among the confiscated items were seven jackhammers, three generators, two shovels, electrical cables, a vehicle battery, a jackhammer box, ten cartons of suspected illicit Remington cigarettes, along with a hammer, knife, screwdriver, and chisel.<\/p>\n

Investigators contend that this equipment may have been utilized in ongoing illegal mining activities, which remain a serious concern in various regions of South Africa as criminal mining rings continue to threaten both safety and economic stability.<\/p>\n

The recovery of items associated with illegal mining and a firearm has prompted further questions about the extent of illicit operations in the area.<\/p>\n

Interception Along N11 Results in Increased Arrests<\/h2>\n

In a parallel deployment under Operation Shanela 2, SAPS members from Sekhukhune Sub-District 1 executed operations in Marble Hall, Matlerekeng, and Elandskraal.<\/p>\n

This initiative brought together police forces from various stations, alongside the Dennilton K9 Unit and private security firms.<\/p>\n

Initially, 25 individuals suspected of illegal immigration were detained across the three locations.<\/p>\n

However, the operation intensified following intelligence reports that undocumented immigrants were being transported from Mokopane to Marble Hall.<\/p>\n

Responding to this information, police intercepted two KIA trucks traveling on the N11, just before they entered Marble Hall.<\/p>\n

This interception resulted in the arrest of an additional 55 individuals suspected of illegal immigration, who were then taken to Marble Hall SAPS.<\/p>\n

Total Arrests Reached 95<\/h2>\n

The operation in Sub-District 1 accounted for 80 arrests, with the Ga-Mpusheng operation contributing another 15.<\/p>\n

Together, these coordinated efforts resulted in a total of 95 arrests.<\/p>\n

Law enforcement is currently collaborating with the Department of Home Affairs to confirm the immigration status of all those detained.<\/p>\n

This series of arrests marks one of the most significant recent efforts to enforce immigration laws in the Sekhukhune District.<\/p>\n

Court Appearances Anticipated<\/h2>\n

Authorities have confirmed that all suspects will be presented before the Sekhukhune and Groblersdal Magistrates\u2019 Courts on Monday, 22 June 2026.<\/p>\n

As the investigation continues, officials will assess whether additional charges will follow, particularly in connection with the firearm, smuggled cigarettes, and the illegal mining equipment that was seized.<\/p>\n

For now, this operation represents a significant enforcement action by law enforcement agencies aiming to address unlawful activities throughout Limpopo\u2019s mining and rural neighborhoods.<\/p>\n
