{"id":33713,"date":"2026-06-27T15:06:47","date_gmt":"2026-06-27T15:06:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wedodis.co.za\/news\/?p=33713"},"modified":"2026-06-27T15:07:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-27T15:07:00","slug":"behind-the-pages-sue-nyathi-reveals-the-truthful-inspirations-of-the-polygamist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wedodis.co.za\/news\/behind-the-pages-sue-nyathi-reveals-the-truthful-inspirations-of-the-polygamist\/","title":{"rendered":"Behind the Pages: Sue Nyathi Reveals the Truthful Inspirations of &#8216;The Polygamist&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sukoluhle \u2018Sue\u2019 Nyathi, a writer from Zimbabwe, is experiencing an extraordinary year following the immense success of <em>The Polygamist<\/em>, a Netflix series that has captivated audiences globally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the author of the novel that inspired the series, Nyathi has been actively engaging with the media, including a guest appearance on Lungelo KM\u2019s <em>Engineer Your Life<\/em> Podcast, where she shared her personal journey and her creative process of transforming <em>The Polygamist<\/em> from concept to written work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet\u2019s get into the polygamist, it\u2019s classified as fiction,\u201d <a id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Vb1Iizy_YoY\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Vb1Iizy_YoY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Lungelo KM<\/a> stated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFiction sometimes is called faction. People often say there\u2019s more truth in fiction than nonfiction. Because you know we also derive fiction [from] things you observe, which are based on truth,\u201d Nyathi replied.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Vb1Iizy_YoY?si=YcnrC63oz3-gltvR&amp;start=808\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-where-is-the-story-set\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where is the narrative placed?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe country keeps on saying the story is based on Bulawayo, or because of Sue\u2019s from there\u2026,\u201d observed Lungelo KM.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c\u2026 The original book is set in Harare in Zimbabwe. That book originated mainly from my observations when I had just commenced my corporate journey, I had relocated from Bulawayo, a very conservative city, to the energetic capital city of Harare,\u201d explained Nyathi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI grew up in a traditional Catholic household\u2026 upon arriving in Harare, I began to notice a phenomenon of men who were seemingly monogamous, yet they had other undisclosed wives and parallel secret lives\u2026 there was deception involved. Some children are born into this arrangement, some remain oblivious to the existence of their other siblings, which made it all the more intricate and fascinating for me. Thus, I thought, okay, I want to craft a narrative around it since it occupied my thoughts for quite some time.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-how-the-characters-found-their-voices\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the characters were developed<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In deciding how to narrate the story, Nyathi opted to focus on the female perspective.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI didn\u2019t want to narrate the story from a man\u2019s perspective: I didn\u2019t wish to place the man at the center, simply because I feel men could easily offer countless justifications for their desire to have multiple partners and partake in polygamous unions,\u201d she remarked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI aimed to center the women, to explore the voices of those women who find themselves in such scenarios, and to understand their choices, while avoiding judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nyathi detailed how she developed her characters during the writing journey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen I write, I immerse myself in the character, I embody that persona. Thus, I become Matipa, I become Joyce, and this method is how I craft these characters, none of whom are based on women I know personally. I constructed them using stereotypes as well\u2026 There are certain types that fit specific [profiles]\u2026 I believe I succeeded, as people often say: \u2018I know a Joyce, I am a Joyce\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m a Matipa, even though they\u2019re hesitant to admit that,\u201d said <a id=\"https:\/\/www.thesouthafrican.com\/lifestyle\/watch-alexandra-mom-and-son-living-in-poverty-after-squandering-r18-million-inheritance\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thesouthafrican.com\/lifestyle\/watch-alexandra-mom-and-son-living-in-poverty-after-squandering-r18-million-inheritance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Lungelo KM<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHowever, some are embracing it, some are owning their narratives. We now live in an era where <em>kudala<\/em>, you know, <em>amakhwapeni<\/em> were concealed, \u2026 but nowadays, women confidently express on social media, &#8216;I\u2019m a side chick,\u2019 and they take pride in that. It\u2019s essential to create diverse characters because stories allow people to see themselves; representation is crucial, and this could be why the series is resonating with audiences\u2014it reflects their realities, they can relate to a character, and if something feels genuine, it will resonate with them,\u201d Nyathi elaborated.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-what-the-response-has-been-like\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the reactions have unfolded<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI appreciate the feedback. I recall that <em>Amnesty International<\/em> shared: \u2018If you\u2019ve watched <em>The Polygamist<\/em>, and you&#8217;re in circumstances similar to Jonasi&#8217;s, here are the steps you can take.\u2019 For me, seeing this type of response is impactful, as it shows a concern for, you know, individuals who are marginalized, those who are suffering, and unsure of their next steps. \u2026 Observing that makes you think, \u2018okay, there\u2019s a narrative out there, I might not be the only one, my struggles are not solo; perhaps others are experiencing similar issues\u2019, and it
