A man has received a 15-year prison sentence after being convicted of raping a 21-year-old woman at knifepoint, betraying the trust of a family that had welcomed him into their home. This ruling was issued by the Griekwastad Regional Court on 13 July 2026.<\/p>\n

The case highlighted the severe impact of sexual violence committed by someone within the victim’s circle. The court deemed Gino September unfit to hold a firearm.<\/p>\n

Mojalefa Senokoatsane, a spokesperson for the Northern Cape National Prosecuting Authority, stated that the assault occurred on the evening of 5 July 2025 at the victim’s home, Heuningkrans Lodge in Griekwastad.<\/p>\n

September had been a friend of the family for roughly six years and was visiting when the family went to bed, leaving him and the complainant watching television in the dining room.<\/p>\n

During the visit, September unexpectedly professed his love for the young woman, who promptly rejected his advances. He subsequently urged her to engage in sexual intercourse, which she declined, asking him to leave instead.<\/p>\n

Instead, September brandished a knife, threatened her, demanded that she strip, forced her onto a couch, and raped her against her will.<\/p>\n

DNA evidence linked him directly to the sexual assault.<\/p>\n

In his defense during the trial, September maintained that the sexual encounter was consensual. However, prosecutor Mothelesi Katlego Thothela presented convincing evidence, including the victim’s testimony, accounts from the first individual she confided in about the rape, medical findings in the J88 report, and DNA analysis.<\/p>\n

Despite the emotional burden of recounting the incident, the complainant stayed strong throughout the trial with significant support from Court Preparation Officer Lindokuhle Sikhakhane, who conducted numerous sessions to help her cope with the process.<\/p>\n

The court characterized the complainant as a trustworthy and consistent witness, noting her reliability during extensive cross-examination. Her account was corroborated by additional testimony, medical findings, and forensic DNA evidence.<\/p>\n

The court dismissed September’s version of events as false and concluded that the prosecution had established the lack of consent by the complainant.<\/p>\n

During sentencing, the prosecution presented a Victim Impact Statement, compiled with Sikhakhane\u2019s assistance, which outlined the lasting emotional and psychological trauma endured by the complainant, particularly from reliving the assault during the trial.<\/p>\n

In arguing for a harsher sentence, the State emphasized that rape is a serious offense that inflicts enduring emotional harm, strips victims of dignity, and invades their bodily integrity and privacy. The prosecutors highlighted that women are entitled to dignity, privacy, and safety, especially in their homes.<\/p>\n

The prosecution further argued that September’s actions were exacerbated by his betrayal of the trust given to him by the complainant and her family, who had considered him a friend.<\/p>\n

The court found the prosecution’s arguments compelling and determined that there were no significant reasons to reduce the prescribed minimum sentence.<\/p>\n

As a result, September was sentenced to 15 years in prison and deemed unfit to own a firearm.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
