LEPHALALE<\/strong> | On Wednesday, five individuals from South Africa are scheduled to appear in the Lephalale Magistrate\u2019s Court following allegations of intimidation against a Nigerian businessman. The suspects are accused of trying to coerce him into shutting down his business and leaving the country.<\/p>\n

These arrests stem from a police operation initiated after an incident in Marapong Township, which has ignited renewed concerns about acts of community vigilantism and the targeting of foreign nationals.<\/p>\n

As detailed by Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the alleged confrontation occurred on July 9, 2026, when a group of local residents confronted the businessman at his establishment.<\/p>\n

The police claim the group demanded that he cease his business operations, asserting that as a foreign national, he lacked the right to run a business in South Africa.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe group of community members confronted the Nigerian at his business and instructed him to close it, claiming that, as a foreign national, he had no right to operate a business in South Africa. The group allegedly threatened to destroy his business and demanded that he leave the country,\u201d Colonel Ledwaba stated.<\/p>\n

Following the confrontation, the businessman was directed to the Department of Home Affairs offices in Lephalale, where officials confirmed his immigration status. Police verified that his documentation was legitimate and that he was in the country lawfully.<\/p>\n

This event triggered a united response from law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n

According to Colonel Ledwaba, members of Lephalale Visible Policing, Detectives, and Public Order Policing conducted a strategic operation after gathering intelligence on those implicated.<\/p>\n

The action resulted in the arrest of five suspects, aged between 20 and 58, at various locations throughout Marapong Township.<\/p>\n

They are anticipated to face charges including intimidation, incitement to violence, and impersonating Home Affairs officials.<\/p>\n

Police also indicated that one suspect would face an additional charge relating to a different intimidation case.<\/p>\n

Initial investigations suggest that the suspects were involved in stirring community members against undocumented foreign nationals and advocating for their unlawful removal from the township.<\/p>\n

Acting Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers has issued a stern warning regarding communities taking immigration enforcement into their own hands.<\/p>\n

He emphasized that no individual or community organization holds the legal power to enforce immigration laws or to check identity and immigration documents.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuch functions are the sole responsibility of duly authorized law enforcement and government officials,\u201d Major General Scheepers stated.<\/p>\n

He urged the public to report any concerns about undocumented individuals through appropriate legal channels rather than engaging in intimidation or unlawful actions.<\/p>\n

\u201cCommunity members are encouraged to report any concerns regarding undocumented persons to the relevant authorities and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.\u201d<\/p>\n

The five individuals are set to make their debut in the Lephalale Magistrate\u2019s Court on Wednesday as the investigation progresses. The case is likely to draw considerable attention, underscoring that immigration enforcement remains a matter for state authorities and that acts of intimidation and vigilantism will not be accepted.<\/p>\n
