An administrative clerk from a North West school has received a 12-year prison sentence after being found guilty of 170 fraud charges, having exploited his role to misappropriate school funds.<\/p>\n

Ofentse Molemane, 37, served as an administration clerk at the institution from 2019 to 2020. He acknowledged all allegations against him during the proceedings at the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Rustenburg.<\/p>\n

Evidence presented in court revealed that Molemane accessed the school\u2019s financial resources and transferred money intended for operational expenses into his personal bank account for private use.<\/p>\n

The North West National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) explained that Molemane devised a deceptive system to mask his illicit activities, which included generating fake invoices that seemed to originate from authentic service providers.<\/p>\n

NPA North West spokesperson Lindiwe Mpanza stated that Molemane\u2019s fraudulent conduct constituted a direct effort to enrich himself at the detriment of the school, its governing body, and the service providers involved.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring sentencing, State Advocate Nkhetheni Mudau indicated that the defendant had carefully orchestrated the fraudulent operation by consistently transferring funds from the school into his personal account and compensating himself unlawfully,\u201d Mpanza noted.<\/p>\n

The prosecution highlighted that the fabricated invoices were a tactic employed to conceal the theft and lend a veneer of legitimacy to the illicit transactions.<\/p>\n

Court finds abuse of trust and greed<\/h2>\n

The court determined that Molemane betrayed the trust associated with his role as a custodian of school administration and financial affairs.<\/p>\n

The prosecution contended that instead of safeguarding public funds, Molemane utilized the stolen resources to finance his personal lifestyle and business ventures, resulting in financial damage to the school, the Governing Body, and its legitimate service providers.<\/p>\n

Molemane\u2019s claim that some of the misappropriated funds were allocated to construct a house for his grandmother was dismissed by the court, which concluded that his motives were rooted in greed.<\/p>\n

The court also viewed his guilty plea not as genuine remorse but rather as a strategy to obtain a lighter sentence.<\/p>\n

It noted that Molemane had a decent salary and could have pursued his personal aspirations through lawful means instead of defrauding the institution that had placed its trust in him.<\/p>\n

Fraud conviction results in lengthy prison sentence<\/h2>\n

Molemane was sentenced to a total of 12 years in prison, with four years of the sentence suspended for five years, contingent on him not being convicted of fraud or similar offenses during the suspension period.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, he was deemed unsuitable to hold a firearm.<\/p>\n

This sentence serves as a stark reminder to those tasked with managing institutional funds that financial wrongdoing and misuse of public resources will have significant repercussions.<\/p>\n
