The University of Fort Hare has acknowledged retired Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga by naming a new international moot court competition in his honour, celebrating his significant contributions to South Africa\u2019s legal field and the growth of future legal professionals.<\/p>\n

The Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga International Moot Court Competition was inaugurated at the university located in the Eastern Cape on Friday.<\/p>\n

Organized by Fort Hare\u2019s Faculty of Law, this initiative aims to equip aspiring legal practitioners with practical skills in research, legal writing, advocacy, and critical thinking through mock court scenarios.<\/p>\n

In addition to courtroom simulations, the competition seeks to engage students with vital constitutional and legal issues currently affecting society and to enhance connections among universities, the judiciary, and the legal community.<\/p>\n

For Madlanga, receiving this honour was profoundly meaningful. However, he made it clear that the focus should be on the students.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do not consider this to be about me. I consider it to be more about Fort Hare\u2019s students who have excelled in competing not only locally but also internationally,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n

He found the recognition to be moving, heartwarming, and humbling, emphasizing the accomplishments of Fort Hare students as the true motivation behind the initiative.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis speaks volumes when we look at where they come from,\u201d Madlanga said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Madlanga commended the university for enhancing the training in jurisprudence and providing avenues for students to refine the analytical skills expected of legal professionals.<\/p>\n

He stated that competitions of this kind could significantly contribute to reinforcing South Africa\u2019s legal framework by adequately preparing students for professional demands.<\/p>\n

Many members of the judiciary, he highlighted, often come from the ranks of legal practitioners, making the quality of legal education a crucial aspect of the nation’s justice system.<\/p>\n

Thus, the moot court competition transcends being a mere academic activity. It offers students a platform to demonstrate their ability to formulate legal arguments, navigate complex challenges, and present cases before a simulated court.<\/p>\n

Madlanga’s presence at Fort Hare coincided with his role as chair of a major inquiry currently scrutinizing allegations of corruption, political meddling, and misconduct within South Africa\u2019s law enforcement sector.<\/p>\n

When questioned about the inquiry during the function, Madlanga opted not to elaborate.<\/p>\n

He mentioned that he had conducted only one media briefing prior to the hearings and intentionally chose not to make public statements regarding the inquiry.<\/p>\n

Madlanga indicated that he would address the inquiry\u2019s progress at a more opportune moment.<\/p>\n

By refraining from discussing the inquiry, he effectively maintained the day\u2019s emphasis on the launch of a program dedicated to nurturing the forthcoming generation of legal experts in South Africa.<\/p>\n

The launch marks another facet of Madlanga\u2019s enduring association with the Eastern Cape and its legal institutions.<\/p>\n

A former Constitutional Court justice, Madlanga retired in 2025 after a prominent legal journey.<\/p>\n

Previously, his name was linked to Fort Hare\u2019s internal moot court program. The new international competition broadens that initiative, extending its influence beyond the university.<\/p>\n

The university stated that the competition aims to cultivate legal practitioners who are not only proficient in their technical skills but also rooted in constitutional principles and ethical leadership.<\/p>\n
