Zondo’s accolade was awarded at the fifth annual Basadi in Music Awards, which took place from August 7 to 8 at the Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. The event united numerous top female artists while highlighting women’s contributions across various musical styles.

In addition to her win, Zondo also participated in the hosting duties alongside Unathi Nkayi, Nomuzi Mabena, and Lerato Kganyago, showcasing her ability to navigate both the stage and the awards categories effectively.

Her recognition as Hip Hop Artist of the Year is indicative of the rising prominence of women in South African hip hop, an area traditionally led by male performers. Given that the award was determined by popular vote, Anele Zondo promptly acknowledged the supporters who cast their votes for her.

For Zondo, this victory comes after years of cultivating a career that spans beyond just music. She first gained recognition for her acting, notably in the acclaimed series The River, before establishing herself as a television personality and music presenter.

In recent years, she has increasingly dedicated herself to her musical pursuits, building an identity characterized by compelling performances, incisive lyrics, and a distinctive personal brand. Her latest release, Bhampa, marks another step forward as she defines her place in the music scene.

The Basadi in Music Awards have evolved into a vital platform celebrating female talent across the diverse musical spectrum in South Africa. The fifth edition, supported by SAMPRA, recognized artists from multiple genres including amapiano, gospel, hip hop, and traditional music.

Other significant winners included Zee Nxumalo, who claimed the prestigious Artist of the Year title, MaWhoo, who won two awards including Amapiano Artist of the Year, and Nothando Hlophe, awarded Song of the Year.

However, for Zondo, the Hip Hop Artist of the Year accolade holds a special significance. Beyond expanding her list of achievements, this win symbolizes the community that continues to support her journey.

Reacting to her win, Zondo has expressed gratitude towards those who helped her secure the title.
