I think it all boils down to authenticity. VANS has consistently resisted the urge to appeal to everyone. Instead, it has remained connected to the communities that embraced the brand initially\u2014skateboarding, surfing, music, art, and creativity. People recognize when something is genuine.<\/span><\/p>\n

The product plays a crucial role as well. Few brands can present a shoe from decades past that still feels relevant today. This blend of maintaining authenticity while allowing each generation to interpret VANS in their own manner likely explains our conversation about the brand’s 60-year legacy.<\/span><\/p>\n

How has the brand been able to maintain its authenticity during its evolution? <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

VANS doesn\u2019t need to pursue trends because it has always been steeped in culture. We continuously evolve with new designs, collaborations, and campaigns, but our foundational principles remain intact.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Off The Wall\u2019 is among the most recognized slogans globally. What does it signify for you today? <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

To me, Off The Wall embodies a mindset rather than just a slogan. While its origins relate to skateboarding and performing tricks off the wall, it now symbolizes anyone who approaches life from a unique perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n

It reflects individuals who don\u2019t merely follow traditional paths. Whether skating, making music, painting, or pursuing any passion, they have the confidence to express themselves in their own way.<\/span><\/p>\n

VANS has become linked to skateboarding, music, and street culture. Which of these communities has shaped the brand the most? <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Skateboarding. Without a doubt.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is the essence of VANS, influencing everything from products to attitudes and creativity, even shaping our marketing strategies. Importantly, skate culture has always intersected with music, fashion, art, photography, and street culture.<\/span><\/p>\n

This blend allows VANS to navigate various realms seamlessly without appearing forced.<\/span><\/p>\n

Which VANS silhouette best represents the brand\u2019s heritage, and why? <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

I would name the Authentic. It symbolizes VANS’ origins, and it is significant that after 60 years, it remains relevant.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is a straightforward shoe, but that simplicity is what makes it outstanding. No hype is necessary; it\u2019s versatile enough for anyone to wear and style, and it often looks better with age.<\/span><\/p>\n

South Africa boasts a vibrant youth and streetwear scene. How has the local market influenced VANS? <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

For us, it\u2019s crucial to ensure that VANS is not merely a global brand marketed in South Africa. We aim for VANS South Africa to actively engage with local happenings, collaborate with the right individuals, support communities, create platforms, and allow regional culture to inform our brand’s presence.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Knu Skool has experienced a significant revival recently. Why do you think this silhouette resonates with a new audience? <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Firstly, it has a great aesthetic. Its oversized \u201990s skate essence\u2014boasting a chunky tongue and generous proportions\u2014aligns well with current youth fashion. Importantly, it is not just VANS creating a retro design; it genuinely stems from our archives.<\/span><\/p>\n

This means that a shoe rooted in VANS history is being rediscovered by a new generation as if it were brand new. That\u2019s quite exciting.<\/span><\/p>\n

Are there any notable collaborations, collections, or initiatives coming from VANS South Africa that fans should anticipate? <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Absolutely. The 60th anniversary presents an excellent opportunity to celebrate our iconic stories and milestones, but we also want to look forward.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our local focus includes reconnecting with various communities\u2014skate, surf, music, and creators\u2014and fostering experiences related to the brand that go beyond products. Additionally, exciting global collaborations and product initiatives are on the horizon. While I can\u2019t share everything yet, there is much for VANS enthusiasts to look forward to.<\/span><\/p>\n

If a person were purchasing their first pair of VANS, which style would you suggest and why? <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s a challenging choice, but if I must select one, it would certainly be the Authentic. It is the foundation of the brand and continues to hold relevance today.<\/span><\/p>\n

What do you hope the next generation associates with VANS in the coming decades? <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

I hope they connect VANS with creativity, individuality, and freedom.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the world is bound to change significantly in the next 60 years, along with its culture, fashion, and technology, I hope VANS continues to be a platform for personal expression, allowing people to break away from conventional molds. If the next generation sees VANS and thinks, \u201cI can make this my own\u201d, then we will have succeeded.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trends may come and go, yet VANS has managed to avoid feeling like a passing trend. What do you attribute this to? <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

VANS wasn\u2019t born out of fashion; it emerged from real communities that embraced the brand, giving the products their significance. The Authentic, Old Skool, and Slip-On styles have been staples for skaters, musicians, artists, and everyday individuals for decades.<\/span><\/p>\n

While fashion trends may cycle back and forth, resulting in VANS enjoying a resurgence, the underlying cultural foundation is strong and hard to replicate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, if you could encapsulate VANS in three words, what would they be? <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n
